Is this an opportunity for UH and SMU to step up to a power conference and maybe boost their brand? Or with OU and Texas leaving does that pretty much eliminate the Big 12 being worth a shite?

Welp nevermind, I see the thread below with most of the other teams thinking of leaving for the Pac-12

Not a done deal they are gone yet.

But if those two leave, the Big 12 becomes the Big East after Miami and Virginia Tech have bolted. They still have a name and are somewhat grandfathered in but it is just a matter of time before they collapse.

they’re no longer a power conference.

The PAC 12 is pretty boxed in geographically but they could add Hawaii, BYU, Boise, and UNLV

With the tv deal being so bad (however expiring in 2023 i think), and the level of dumbass-ness on the part of Larry Scott..could the big 12 convince Arizona or Arizona State to come? Or even get Colorado back?

PAC 12 still takes in more than the Big 12 as of now.

Only difference is the distribution of funds.

PAC 12 has more teams so a small cut for each but the Big 12 has unequal sharing.

If anything, I think it’s more likely that the American scoops up some of the big 12’s scraps

If Texas and Oklahoma leave the Big 12, it isn’t a power conference anymore

I've said this about 10,000 times over the last 48 hours:

The Big 12 is dead once UT and OU leave. Because it will have no more main eventers. It will no longer be a power conference. You need main event tent poles to make a league a power conference.

Adding UCF, Memphis, etc. will not elevate the conference back to power conference status. Such a league would be treated as a mid major conference and rightfully so.

the Big XII will still have 8 P5 teams (but no brands), but they'll be far behind the other P5 conferences with 12 (Oregon, USC, Washington?), 14 (OSU, Mich, Penn St., Nebraska), 14 (Clem, Miami, FSU, ND*) , and now 16 (Fla, UGA, Ten, Bama, A&M, Auburn, LSU, and now Texas and OU)

OSU and Baylor would be pretty screwed as they aren't a fit or too far distance wise from a fit. Tech as well.

WVU gotta hope ACC takes them and ignores academics?

Like Louisiana Tech did when they finally got into CUSA?

They got there and found out they would not be playing Louisville, DePaul, Houston, Memphis, or even the great rivalry games with Tulane. Those guys all left for greener pastures. They were left to fend for respectability with Middle Tenn., North Texas, UTSA, New Mexico and WKU. Tech left the WAC to play some former Sunbelt teams. Nothing against Tech, or any of the current CUSA members, but we all know it's not the CUSA they wanted so badly.

A Big XII with no Texas, OU or Nebraska, would lose some of their bowl slots for sure.

ETA: I could even see it going the way of the SWC. The best of it's members could be absorbed into the SEC, Big 10, ACC and SEC.

No but I think we should hear something official soon. None of the schools or conferences are denying it. With everything coming out so quickly, it seems likely they've been working on this for a while.

Just got this email from BU. Rumor is they have talked with PAC 12, academic rank may help them land somewhere.

Dear Baylor Family:

As many of you are aware, news broke this week of an alleged change in the Big 12 Conference membership, linking the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma with a possible move to the Southeastern Conference.

Since that time, we have heard many of you express concerns about the uncertainty of our conference and the potential impact on Baylor University a concern we share with you.

We understand the significance and urgency of this matter, as our conference membership impacts not only Baylor, but also the Waco community, the state of Texas and beyond. Conference affiliation has the power to greatly enhance our institution's academic and athletic national standing and visibility while also expanding academic and research opportunities available to faculty, students and our communities. For our state, it is critical to our economy and Texas' overall reputation to maintain five "Power Five" institutions, reinforcing the Lone Star State's athletic preeminence.

Rest assured, we, along with the Board of Regents, members of the Baylor delegation in the Texas Legislature and other Baylor leaders, are actively engaged in conversations with our Big 12 colleagues and others to ensure our University is in the strongest position possible now and into the future.

In the midst of what promises to be a lot of angst and speculation, we will continue to focus on what we can control and support our student-athletes and staffs. And, as the landscape of college athletics continues to change, we maintain an unshakable belief in the strength and resiliency of Baylor and the Baylor brand.

Thank you for your enduring love of Baylor University and the vital role you play in helping Baylor carry out its Christian mission while competing academically and athletically at the highest levels.

Sincerely,

Linda A. Livingstone, Ph.D.

I just don't see this happening. I can't seem them getting over our religious views.
