This is a no win situation for them. Choices are:

Why should the players care what the donors think? The AD should care but the donors should absolutely have no say what the players do.
Just because you’re a rich old dude doesn’t mean you get to tell a bunch of student athletes what to do. The players don’t owe the donors anything just because they are rich and donate money to the program.

There's precedent . The Wyoming "Black 14" of 1969. Didn't turn out too great for the up & coming perennial Top 10 Cowboys program that lost 4 straight & was 1-9 the following season.
Most of these kids had no clue about this song or its meaning until they hit campus. These formerly segregated schools / traditions ( Ole Miss Rebels) certainly did not have Black students in mind.
