How incredible was Boise State’s run circa 2006-12?

Let’s be clear. They suck shite now, and Avalos is arse. With that said, I feel like their run was something that shouldn’t have happened, had no reason to happen, and was quite real.
They were an outstanding G5-type (whatever it was back then) under Hawkins, but flipped a switch with Petersen. I want to say that the pollsters were crazy for even having BSU in the mix as a natty caliber team, but when they took their shots at Oregon, Oregon State, VT, and Georgia, they won.
I wouldn’t put the improbable success on the level of a North Dakota State, but it’s crazy that a “program” took hold in fricking Boise.

I am guessing Auburn went after BSU HC Bryan Harsin thinking he is the real deal.

Peterson and Harsin were able to do great things there (Harsin more so just keeping it from imploding like it has now apparently).

Right, the OP could rationally stretch their run out longer.
Harsin had 5 10-win seasons, 4 top-25 finishes and a Fiesta Bowl win.
Not quite the heights Petersen had them at, but they remained pretty damn good.

One of those rare "where were you when" games and didn't matter who your home team is. I was in Colorado on a ski trip.

They were able to recruit the best players of the G5 schools because of their proximity to California and the massive exposure that the program got during that time.

Wasn't this board all up in a tizzy rooting for them to lose every week?
Pat Hill's run at Fresno State was pretty impressive too.
Considering most of the nation hadn't heard of Fresno State.

You can make a good case that they were 2 fluke plays from playing for a national championship in 2010 (Mark Ingram’s fumble in the Iron Bowl when Bama was up 21-0, Kyle Brotzman’s missed 26-yard field goal) against an Oregon team they swept in a home-and-home over the prior two seasons.

That game sort of put Boise on the map. After that season, they only won fewer than 10 games once over the next decade.

I believe it was year 4 of the move to D1 when they first won 10 games. Dan Hawkins had a stretch from 02-04 where they went 36-3.

Those misses were incredible to watch live, but Boise truthfully should've never let it come down to him.
They had a comfortable lead at halftime and let it get away. Their defense was uncharacteristically gashed in the 2nd half.

Yes 2001.
Beating #10 Oregon State (they were preseason #1 by Sports Illustrated), #23 Wisconsin at Camp Randall.
But then they lost a close game to Boise State.

What's funny is everyone remembers the last few plays (hook and ladder, RB TD pass, statue of liberty) but honestly Boise was kicking OU's arse up and down the field all game.
They were up 28-10 midway through the 3rd quarter and OU was punting the ball away. The punt hit the leg of a Boise St blocker and then OU recovered and scored, and the comeback was on.
I always wondered what would have happened if it was a routine punt and Boise got back on offense instead at that point. If they go down the field and score again to make it 35-10 that probably would have been game at that point and we may remember that game as a blowout.

Which year was that?
Because Utah 2004 is the first non-BCS team to win a BCS bowl. People forget it b/c of what Boise did 2 years later
