re: How exactly was the 80-90s NBA better than current? Talent wise

In general, the rookies had more college experience so they were able to contribute more in the past than now. The changes to the salary cap have made it more difficult to retain players today. Thus teams rotate all but their star players and they have more difficulty developing and maintaining chemistry.

How many titles did Stockton lead his teams to??????

Today's players are better but VERY soft in general. Too much whining. And 80s players were all about business/winning. Today's players are all about money.

Fewer teams, so more talent on the teams.
Not really true.
First of all, we are talking about 50 players (excluding end of bench guys that barely play) that were added by expansion in 88/89 and then Canadian plus Bobcats expansion. I dont think finding that many guys who can play in the league is a tall order given the sheer number playing in college, Europe, etc. Now if we want to argue about the quality of FOs in finding and developing those guys, Im with you.
Plus the 80s were just as stacked with upper crust teams. The West now is like the East back then- lots of quality different top dogs getting to the Finals. The East now is like the West- one alpha team, mostly a bunch of meh otherwise.
Always cracks me up when people complain about superteams or lack of parity and cite the 80s as the counterpoint. No one ever mentions the cellar dwellers of the 80s.
The NBA is at its best with truly great superteams. Parity doesnt work because you end up with mediocre product for an 8 month season.

Look at the averages I posted, how in the hell could anyone take Stockton and Kidd over Paul?
Chris Pauls stats per game- 18.6 Points, 9.8 assists, 2.4 turnovers per game
John Stockton- 13.1 points, 10.5 assists, 2.8 turnovers
Jason Kidd- 12.6 points, 2.4 assists, 2.9 turnovers
Give me paul any day

Stockton- Alltime leaders in assists and steals and did it for 20 years. Paul won't come close.

quote:Well there assist average is even so there is that. Plus he give you five more point per game. It is a fact that is numbers are flat out better. One could argue intangibles, but no argument can be made for raw production

LBJ and DwAde would have gotten their pussy asses beat down in the old days.
FACT
FACT

LBJ is like 6-9, 270 or something. who would be beating him down?
Posted on 6/23/13 at 11:42 am to lsupride87
Stockton never took as many shots as Paul. Plus, Paul hasn't had his numbers drop, as they will when his career winds down.

Bill Laimbeer was about 225 lbs of pure man beast. LeBron would have been shaking in his boots.

Didn't have creatine and various peds and amino acids n shite for lebron to get swole on back then

Laimbeer was more like 245, but, yeah, not as stout as LeBron.
Posted on 6/23/13 at 11:44 am to SabiDojo
would have obviously beaten the shite out of this

In all fairness, guys like Oakley, Anthony Mason, Mahorn could give Bron some problems physically.
Posted on 6/23/13 at 11:47 am to SabiDojo
i'm not taking away from mchale as a player, but to claim he would dominate lebron physically is funny

McHale part of the best frontcourt in history with The Chief and Bird. all physical also and not afraid to fight.

sure...2 of those 3 are more "90s players" than "80s players" for the record
and the problem is that they would have to "catch" lebron
i mean people forget who was scoring points in the 90s. they weren't as big or as physical as lebron and they could score
Posted on 6/23/13 at 11:50 am to SlowFlowPro
McHale was a great player, but that picture makes me laugh.
This board needs to get over the fact that NO player from ANY era matches up to LeBron's size and athleticism.
It is what makes him so special.
