A couple months back I was talking to this guy from Monroe, the topic of LSU was brought up and he tells me he's a big, big fan so I asked him who he would rather see at QB, Jennings or Harris. He goes on to tell me that he has not been able to get to Baton Rouge to see a game in a while and acted like he had no idea who those two people were.

He must have meant when they play Auburn.

Ignore and associate only at a professional level with very basic and generic responses. I've found those types to be ones looking for trouble.

I've learned to just walk away or not say anything. I know I've run my mouth on shite I had no idea about, hell I've done it multiple times on TD alone (the Outdoor Board with kayaks comes to mind). The problem is, when you're not exactly the most knowledged on the situation, you don't know how little you actually know.

Correct them or nod your head and let them live on blissfully ignorant?

I work with a guy from Louisville, says he's a fan.
-He insists that Auburn and Louisville play in football all the time and played in the last few years (they've played once in 1974.)
-He claims Louisville played for and lost a national championship in football in the last decade.
-He's certain that Kevin Ware broke his leg in the National Championship game just this March.

This guy I don't even attempt to correct because he's beyond helping.

Another coworker is an LSU fan who knows just enough to hold a conversation about college sports.
-He was worried that LSU and Auburn wouldn't play each other this year because they don't play much. Being in the same division doesn't mean you play every year, as evidenced by LSU and UGA rarely playing.
-He said LSU never loses at home, "at least not in the 20 years I've been watching them."
-Informed me Auburn hasn't been any good since Eli Manning played QB for AU.

This guy I corrected on all counts, but he's brighter than the Louisville fan.

you work in a cool place

you are so cool cause of all the knowledge of sports you possess.

I usually whoop his arse because knowing a lot about watching other people play sports is very important.

There are all kinds of fans out there at varying levels of interest. I don't fault someone for being less interested than me in a given subject. It's easier to talk about it though if someone has a similar interest level though.

Then there are idiots who claim to know more than they really do. Just nod your head and try not to be confrontational. Correct gently when possible.

This is in a city with pro teams in a Midwestern state with awful college teams. Nobody here cares about college football, this kind of thing is very common when I try to talk college football. Trust me, before I moved out of the south I didn't think it possible either.

Some people don't care about sports but they want to be part of a conversation so they fake it.

This is my "Alabama Fan" of an uncle. He was born in Washington, so I'll cut him a tiny bit of slack. Except he also claims to be a UDub fan, and by fan, I mean he occasionally realizes they exist during seasons they go above .500 and tells me how great they did.

I've tried to teach him, I really have. He just doesn't get it most of the time. I've had countless mini-arguments with him explaining the game of football where he refuses to listen to rule explanation and tries to shout me down. I've also watched him get in arguments with fans of other teams at Buffalo Wild Wings and completely embarrass himself, and most Alabama fans. By furthering the sidewalk, redneck, ignorant Bama fan stereotype. Somehow....despite being born in a suburb of Portland, Oregon. Or sometimes, he will even embarrass himself with fellow Bama fans by arguing about a flag or play. In either type of situation he has no idea he has made a fool out of himself.

He started an arrangement with me last year doing Draft Kings during the NFL playoffs, and we will do it all season this year for both CFB and NFL. Basically, he will put up the funds, I will pick the players, and we will split the winnings. He doesn't even know enough about football to bet money on his own opinion of it. Yet he will consistently opine about the state of the team. How good Bama will be, mostly on years the team will be bad(by our standards), and on how bad the team will be, mostly on years the team should be "normal".

He also pays me to draft and run all of his teams in the fantasy leagues he is a part of. Including his work, church, and friends. We have been in two leagues together, and I ran both of our teams in both leagues. He gives me "bonuses" if his teams come in first in the regular season, make the playoffs, make the champ game, or win the league. Doesn't make any sense to me, it isnt any fun to have a team and to not be the on running it. But he wants to be a part of the leagues, and I guess he doesn't want to be embarrassed by always coming in last.

I'll give him this, he became a fan in the late 90s/ early 2000s, when Bama football wasn't always something to write home about. So He isn't one of those fans who were attracted by the success of a team. I will also commend him for at least somewhat recognizing the fact I know a lot more than him about the game. Many people like him refuse to acknowledge that anyone else knows more than them.

Edit: For the record, I feel like a lot of people in here do. Not every fan has the time or the interest to know all of the intimate details of the team. I grew up following Bama, and football in general, it almost feels like I know everything I do through osmosis. I just do, can't tell you specifically where I learned all of it.

I don't fault a fan for not being knowledgeable as I would like them to be. I fault them when they do things like my uncle, actions that embarrasses themselves and the fan base they claim to be a part of. Or, for example, when they basically refuse to learn a simple rule when something happens they do not understand. Instead of listening to, and learning from, someone who knows more. They just get mad at the ref, the announcers, or the other team.

I just let them go.

Sometimes you can tell if they are an informed fan that remembered something wrong, or a band wagon idiot who just roots for the home team.

People should enjoy things however they want to enjoy them. The only way it becomes a problem is if the no-nothing fan tries to pretend he is knowledgeable. But if you just want to root for the coolest uniform, knock yourself out.
