How do the big ten fans here feel about the additions to your conference the last 10 years

I totally understand why this is happening. Money and top brands are the key to CFB success as a conference and these moves have only expanded the Big Tens influence, profitability, and footprint. So I get it. But as a fan of the sport and your team, how do you feel?
Penn state has been in the big ten all my life but my dad still doesn’t consider them really the big ten. To him it’s still mind blowing they’re in the same conference as OSU and Michigan.
My dads family is heavily rooted in the Midwest specifically Indiana and Illinois. Most of them think it’s really weird having Maryland, Rutgers, and now both LA schools in the conference. It’s like they look around and think of course the money and exposure is great, but they don’t really care about playing the new east coast schools. And I’m sure they’ll fee the same about the new west coast schools. There’s no rivalry there. Not very passionate compared to rivalries that are 100 years old, obviously.
I feel myself feeling the same way in the SEC. Is it fun to play Texas and OU as a novelty? Sure. Do I want to sacrifice playing LSUs 100 year old rivals to play new ones, more? No. I’d much rather play Alabama, auburn, Florida, and ole miss every year like LSU has done for decades. There’s legitimate regional interest and turmoil that makes even less important games between them more interesting.
I’m just curious if big ten fans feel the same way. The money is great, but I look around and say, what’s happened to college football?

I feel this way about Arkansas and South Carolina.

Your dad's dad couldn't wrap his head around the Michigan State Spartans being in the conference instead of the Chicago Maroons. The Big Ten, and college football as a whole, will look different in 25 more years.

I honestly still completely forget Maryland is a Big 10 school now, I still think of them as ACC.

Eh, I'm indifferent at this point. I've accepted conference expansion + knowing my alma mater will never have a meaningful rivalry with certain conference members (i.e. Maryland and Rutgers).

I still don’t understand how the Cali schools will work out in the Big 10
Football should be ok. 8 or so conference games
If one of USC’s away games is at the Rose Bowl, then there are only three long plane rides.
But how about for smaller, non revenue sports with more games?

Maryland and Rutgers really haven’t contributed anything to the conference, especially Rutgers. I feel like the Big 10 could have done much better

Because it’s retarded. The different regions/conferences make college sports more interesting and fun. It’s insane for USC to be in the same conference as east coast schools

quote:Absolutely. It’s gonna be a huge drain on many sports. What made college football great was the regionalism and the debate of who is the best. Now it’s minor league farm systems. And just a few schools will dominate. It will become bland.

Maryland and Rutgers were brought in for one reason, to provide strategic media footprint, which would yield many millions per school in additional revenues. It was a sweeping success.
Nebraska has been a pathetic addition. Brand is cratering and they’re one of the worst FBS programs as of late. They were brought in to add a powerhouse and instead, they’ve become Rutgers or kansas football with an even worse hoops program. Their record against Iowa and Wisconsin would shock most casual fans.

I don't either.
I remember well when the Big Ten actually had 10 teams.
PSU and everyone that has come after them feel like non conference games.

We've lost to UNL once since they joined the B1G iirc.
Their first conference game was at night in Camp Randall.
Did not end well for them as they got their shite pushed in. It's the only time I have ever heard a B1G chant as UNL was welcomed to the conference.

We don't consider Penn State and the rest of them as actual Big Ten schools. We brought them in for the money.
Nebraska has been a huge disappointment. Should have taken Missouri, much more competitive. That's saying something because I know how SEC fans feel about Mizzou.
Honestly, I think the sport would be better off if we reset the clock back to pre-Big 12 days and had the Big 8 and SWC back. Regional conferences and rivals is the backbone of CFB. Money has ruined it.

Id much rather see A&M play bama than Baylor or Tech and id much rather see UCLA play ohio state than arizona state or oregon stare

I'm a Penn State fan and I still have a hard time seeing them as part of the Big10. I grew up when when we regularly played Pitt, WVU, Notre Dame, Miami etc. Ohio State is our biggest rival but we are obviously not Ohio State's.
I do think Penn State's admission was mutually beneficial to both the B10 and Penn State.
The addition of Maryland and Rutgers did seem odd but makes sense from the financial aspect. They haven't contributed much aside from their media markets. It did reunite PSU with a couple of it's pre Big10 semi-regular opponents.

I think scandal wise Penn State fits in perfectly with the Big 10 schools

Most feel this way (and it's been 30 years)..imagine how USC and UCLA fans are gonna feel?
And most people still don't realize Maryland is in the Big10.
And think Rutgers is Big East or worse, Ivy.

Penn State fan and my first year at Penn State was Penn State’s inaugural Big Ten season in 1993. So, I’m pure BIG era - I don’t know much different. Maryland and Rutgers are loss leaders to fortify the mid Atlantic from a media standpoint. If you want to believe some internet conspiracies, PSU was talking to the ACC around 2012 and 2013 because of the Sandusky Scandal. MSU ironically was the most vocal wanting PSU out and there were some schools that never wanted PSU in to begin with. While it wasn’t a consideration when PSU joined, BIG TV rights exploded after PSU joined due to bringing Philly, Pittsburgh, a good portion of DC, Baltimore, and NYC.
The rumor was Rutgers and MD were brought in to keep PSU from jumping or as a hedge if PSU jumped. A lot of the older PSU fans would prefer the ACC. PSU in the ACC would mean the BIG would lose the Philly, NYC, Baltimore, DC, and all of PA TV markets. Turn on the time machine, if that happened, the ACC would have had a monster TV contract and the BIG would most certainly be behind the SEC and ACC for media rights.
