Football is different, it's unrealistic to play some sort of best of series.
Single elimination is so dumb though in basketball (and especially baseball).

Because as exciting as March Madness is it's a stupid way to crown a champion in basketball.
I feel like there is a false narrative developing that duke was actually the best team this past year. You could make a pretty good argument that they were the first half of the season but they had a lot of issues and they were pretty mediocre the last couple months even when Zion came back and was playing better than ever.

I don't know, but single elimination in basketball is pants-on-head retarded.
Imagine if the NBA was like that. The 01 Lakers, who had arguably the greatest playoff run in NBA history, wouldn't have been champs because they lost game 1.

Young talented players often do not win championships over experienced players in college basketball (see Fab Five).

This

People in this thread are making Duke out to be 2015 Kentucky, and the reason they didnt win is that damn unlucky single elimination tournament

Duke would have struggled even with a series. 2015 Kentucky and other past teams would have been untouchable in a series

K is obviously overrated and lost his ability to coach. It’s the only acceptable answer. Nothing to do with no time to build team chemistry, or other programs getting better, or a 64 team, single elimination tournament.

K has lost it

Duke wasn't a great team. They had NO outside shooting and ZERO cohesiveness. They had great talent for sure, but you have to be able to play offense, pass, and shoot and then play defense together.

Duke basically had 3 Nba draft picks at Power forward and then a decent PG and a bunch of bums. Their talent wasn't spread out or in the right places as a team.

It’s really weird that they won the acc tournament but then looked like dogshit the entire ncaa tournament.

It is very difficult to win with so many freshmen starting.

The head coach is 72--how many more years will he still coach?

Nonsense. They still won the ACC. Beat Virginia twice. Only had 2 (close) losses with healthy Zion - a #1 seed Gonzaga and B10 champ and Final Four team Michigan State.

Because any one team can get hot during March Madness and still knock out the most talented team.

Hell, they were VERY fortunate they didn't get knocked out earlier.

The NCAA basketball tournament is single elimination with a gigantic field. It's extremely high variance, probably the most high variance way to determine the champion in any major sport, college and pro.

There are tons of examples of by far the best team in the field not winning it.

People love the tournament because it's exciting, unique, and good for gambling, but it's a really sub-optimal way to determine a champion.

It's a single-elimination tournament.

Pretty easy to not win a national title.

I think it's far more fair to ask how the 2019 Duke team finished just third in the ACC.
