Character absolutely matters.
Watson got the money guaranteed, and clearly doesn’t GAF.
Very few wealthy athletes have the internal drive to excel. Few and far between.
Those that do:
Woods
Brady
Mahomes
Nicklaus
Some who didn’t:
Spieth
Thomas
Cousins
Flacco
Jackson
I wouldn’t put Watson in the latter class mainly because the five I listed care and have class, they just don’t care enough to put in the work necessary to be elite.
Watson doesn’t care. There are a lot of professional sports who make generational wealth and frankly don’t care anymore.

I have not looked this up but is it possible Deandre Hopkins had a lot to do with Watsons early success? Once the Texans traded Hopkins for David Johnson’s corpse, I don’t remember Watson having any good results but I could be misremembering.

Watson's best statistical year was his last year playing in Houston, the year after Hopkins was gone.

This would be an incredible lack of self awareness on his part, which I guess shouldn't be surprising. When his time in Cleveland is done, his time in the league is done.
