re: How did anyone at Ohio state think Dwayne fricking Haskins was ever better than Joe burrow?

Joe Burrow was fighting an uphill battle for Urban's favor from the beginning. He was offered a scholarship late in the cycle. He told stories about how Urban used to tell him stuff like "you throw like a girl" and all that crap.
Urban is a coach who plays favorites and Burrow was NOT one of his favorites. He was a backup plan from the beginning and he was never going to play at Ohio State. Huge whiff by a coach with tunnel vision --- couldn't see the talent right under his nose.

Lots of revisionism by Ohio State fans out there.

Must be difficult to admit that the more talented player got away.
The better player got away! No way around it. The issue is its only clear in hindsight and to pretend otherwise is disingenuous.

Just for context, Ohio State offered Dwayne Haskins in April 2014, several months before they offered Joe Burrow in June 2014.
The thing that makes this fact really interesting is that Haskins was A YEAR YOUNGER than Burrow.
Haskins was always the guy. Offered as a HS sophomore, courted heavily throughout the process, and dubbed the heir apparent to JT Barrett from the beginning.
By contrast, Burrow was a camp offer as a rising senior, a backup plan who was subsequently derided by his head coach for several years before getting a fake "opportunity" to win the job.

If true, why was Burrow 2nd string in 2016?

The real reason that Burrow transferred is because Urban was enamored with Tate Martell, not Haskins.

people tend to forget our main competition for burrow was Cincy. It wasn't like he was this rock star then that the whole nation was after. Our QB room was pathetic and Burrow could walk in and be the day one starter. General consensus seemed we were getting a better danny etling...so really basically everyone got it wrong, minus the Burrow family and that Burreaux poster.

Sure but the guy was clearly talented. Clearly a smart QB. His point is OSU coaches should have known that.
The real answer is Haskins beat Michigan when Burrow and Barrett were hurt and sorta took the position.

Burrow was second string in 2016 only because Haskins was redshirted to preserve his eligibility. Obvious answer.
OSU fans have reinterpreted this to mean Burrow was “ahead” of Haskins. He wasn’t.

He wasn't ahead or behind until after he broke his thumb on his throwing hand and had surgery.
Haskins showed out in the Michigan game, and the rest is history.
I don't understand why LSU fans are so obsessed with this narrative

It isn’t an obsession, we just see it differently. The narrative is that Urban was always fixated on a certain type of player and Burrow wasn’t it.
It is a problem that continues to dog him, actually. It isn’t an indictment of Ohio State as much as it is of Urban Meyer, whose last “hit” came almost a decade ago.

That doesn't explain Haskins playing over Burrow. It actually is counter to your point.
Burrow was a dual threat, Haskins was a pocket passer.

This post right here is the worst take in the thread filled with bad takes. OSU fans were as happy for Burrow as anyone but also realize that Haskins was incredible for OSU in his only year starting.
50 TDs in a season is incredible. That would have led the P5 this season, last season, and led it in 2018. Hell it's the 2nd most TDs by a P5 QB ever, behind only Joe Burrow a year later. One of them had to go, and OSU chose to ride Haskins who had one of the best QB seasons ever in cfb as a rSO
Edit: sorry 3rd all time a guy from Tech had 53 in 2003 and he's tied with Bradford

at the end of the day regardless of what happened in their pro careers, they ended up with a guy that finished 3rd in the Heisman voting. It's not really that colossal of a frick up
a colossal frick up is looking at Taylor Martinez and telling Burrow "nah we're good"

At least frost could say he barely saw Joe Play
I’d still take anyone of Martinez.

Sorry, I am projecting on you because that is what others are claiming.
My bad.
All good.
The reality is nobody knows what would have happened if Burrow and Haskins switched places for the 2018 season. It's fun to talk about, but we simply can't know.

Would Nebraska have hired Joe Brady? People have forgotten that Burrow had a mediocre 2018.
