'How to Win in Recruiting'

quote:

We wanted to find out exactly how high school football players perceive the Power 5 schools, so we asked 224 recruits to grade their interest and desire in each program as if they were the number one recruit in the country (i.e. they had offers from every school).

Thoughts?

Do they know that Bama has won 5 out of nine titles? Guess not...

So the perception of playing time is greatly reflected. Which is odd considering Alabama played 17 true freshmen this past season.

That graph just makes one really really appreciate the job Pat Fitzgerald is doing at Northwestern.

Looking at the list, how does the SEC recruit so well?

SEC probably kills most of those big 10 schools on campus visits. They're asking a bunch of guys that haven't visited all these campuses and facilities.

Wisconsin can barely land a single 4 star recruit yet appears in the top 16 of both our brand rankings and revenue rankings.

Oregon and Clemson don't try to be Alabama and Ohio State. You could make the case that Wisconsin does.

Disagree. Wisconsin has a system in place and recruits to fit that system.

Bama wins recruiting basically every year yet in their analysis of what wins recruiting they put them at #19?

This assumes every player is the same rating. So even though a shitload of 1* scrubs from Minnesota don't think Alabama is that great it has no bearing on the top athletes Bama pulls.

I don't even understand what the article is trying to convey.

Starts out by explaining how important branding is, with a poll, which they don't explain at all.

Then they jump straight into hard recruiting data. That data doesn't support their brand claim.

Alabama had 7 straight #1 classes and still finished in their tier 1 this cycle. They're 18th in branding, though. The SEC usually has, what, 7-9 teams in the top 20 of recruiting? But only 5 of the top 20 brands. Again, the article contradicts itself, no?

ETA: Their downfall is probably the sample size. 224 isn't nearly enough.

Thoughts? I'd like to see the polling data, including what these players were rated, where they were located, etc. It's easy to poll some random 200+ kids in Ohio or California who aren't top prospects and go "OH LOOKS LIKE BAMA ISN'T TOPS AFTER ALL!".

I've said this in a previous post, but professionalism in journalism is dead. All they care about is getting likes or whatever. Reporting credible stories is no longer the standard.

I still don’t understand how Penn State’s image rebounded so quickly after the pedophilia scandal. It’s in a better place than it was before the scandal I think. They benefit from being the only major college football program in the Northeast.

I’m curious how the 224 recruits polled were chosen.

They should have done it by star rating. It would have been far more informative.

It means Nick Sabah doesn't care about social media and still hauls in the best players every year.

Their poll is a decent attempt at brand recognition. However, a random sample of 224 players is not how recruiting is won. There is a distinct geographic bias in NFL players, and location is a big deal to many recruits. A random sample is going to miss that, for example.
