They were probably dorks in high school so they try to attach themselves to a winner or an alpha to live through vicariously.

Yes these diehards are the worst.

Well mostly Yankees, Patriots Red Sox and Lakers fans who picked them because they’re good

What gets me (when I was in school and not that long ago) are my fellow southerners claiming how much they hate northerners as they wear Red Sox or Yankees hats

This is kind of a try hard post. I don't see what the big deal is if you follow certain players. It's also not mutually exclusive to NBA players.

The NBA sucks today because of these diva so-called superstars. Makes my stomach turn.

Since my son was getting older I finally bought into season tickets for the Pels this year. Being from BR and the Pels being an expansion team/team that moved its been hard to really get into it like I am for the Saints, but I figured I would buy season tickets and work my way in.
Of course, the Pels decide to tank and the best player basically quits and is waiting to go somewhere else
Really makes it tough to try and become a diehard pels fan

I root for ex-Arizona players in the pros regardless of team. Not sorry about that.
Beyond that, I can generally like a player if he's never really been close to my team or a rival. I just can't get really cranked up about a player who has never really impacted my team.
I get why Spurs fans would not like Kawhi. Having a guy leave your favorite team in an ugly way is one thing. I get why Pels fans feel like they do about AD.
A guy like Giannis...he's really not in any competition, I think he's a great player and enjoy watching him. I don't really think that makes me a fanboy, but I do generally enjoy seeing great players doing their thing.

People will eventually dislike Giannis after he doesn’t win any titles by his 28th birthday and he wants out of Milwaukee

No issue with that. I wouldn’t mind seeing a former Tiger hold up the LOB so long as it wasn’t at the expense of my team.

I’m not referring to this. Giannis is fantastic. My team is out of it, so I have no problem pulling for the Bucks.
I hated the Mavs, but always admired Dirk. I can appreciate greatness, even Lebron.
The fans I can’t respect though, are the ones you run into at a bar in South Texas...or Louisiana, wherever...and say they are Lakers fans. Used to be Cavs fans. Or they are Warriors fans but used to be Thunder fans.
How can someone who isn’t loyal to a team truly get excited about a championship?

can respect a dude’s game, even like the player a lot...but people slobbing on the knob of a guy who isn’t on their squad is pathetic.
What if you never had a squad?

This is much more of an NBA thing than it is in any other sport.
Understandably so. No domestic league markets their stars nearly as well as the NBA.
This also isn't a new development. People adore Bird, Jordan, Magic, etc.

I'm sort of like that with the NBA more than other sports. When I was a kid, I was a huge Charles Barkley fan when he was with the 76ers, then the Suns became my favorite team, then I started to root for the Rockets at the end of his career.
Also with Shaq because of the LSU connection and seeing him at LSU basketball camp. I became an Orlando fan, then the Lakers again (my 1st favorite team in Magic era), then pulled for the Heat when he won it with DWade.
