Exactly how bad is this baseball team? I know McClane thinks he can win on the cheap, but he needs to wake up.

Bad. Very bad. I believe the worst in the league when it all shakes out.

They suck...and I think they have the third highest payroll in the National League.

Going to be a long year. Attendance falls far enough at least there should be good ticket deals.

The Astros blow but thats not why. I don't really think you know what you are talking about. Money isn't the problem. Poor signings and shitty minor league development is the problem. They need to trade Oswalt this year, no questions asked. They can keep or trade Berkman, he won't fetch nearly the prospects as Oswalt. Also they need to try and get rid of Carlos Lee in the offseason but they will likely have to pick up half of his salary. Other than that they just have to hope some minor leaguers work out. Also they are notorious for waiting way to long to bring guys up to the show.

I agree with this for the most part. While crappy minor league development was part of it I think another piece of the problem was Uncle D's position for a few years of not signing the player to a contract that was over the slotted amount.

Since Ed and company have been here they have actually signed the majority of their draft picks which they did not do for a while. Which at least is a step in the right direction.

0-7 bad and getting worse. As long as the owner wont turn loose of some serious cash they will never have the players to reach the World series again.

I predicted they will be the worst team in baseball this year and they are currently overacheiving against that goal.and I'm a lifelong Astros die hard. I'm so pissed at the state of this franchise and the fact that they roll out guys who don't try like Carlos Lee and Matsui on a daily basis. They are going to be the worst team in baseball. Losing breeds losing. They don't have the nuts to bench Lee and pay him and let someone else play anyway. The Yankees wouldn't bat an eye to sitting an untradeable player and make his life miserable.

Three men are responsible for this mess. McLane himself who thought he could ride Biggio tribute nights forever, Tal Smith who is proven to be one of hte most useless execs in baseball, and Tim Purpura who was so far in over his head and had basically no decision making power to build a team. He was essentially a gopher for McLane.

The failure of about 10 consecutive drafts and horrible free agent deals like Lee are what is to blame here.

Drayton has spent some money, but in the wrong places and he has hired yes men instead of baseball men who will tell him the truth even if he doesn't like it.

At least Ed Wade has got him to invest in scouting and the draft now.

Oswalt isn't going anywhere for now. Hes 7 victories shy of becoming the teams all time wins leader. You're crazy if you think Drayton isn't going to play that up and have some kind of ceremony for him to try to put asses in the seats.
