In a break from the many Lebron threads
ESPN link

quote:

The head football coach at an Ohio high school and six other coaches there have been ousted after a football player said he was forced to eat pork in violation of his religious beliefs for missing a voluntary workout.

quote:

A lawyer for the teen player's family has announced plans to sue the school district. The player and his family are members of the Hebrew Israelite religious faith and do not eat pork.

quote:

The teen's attorney, Ed Gilbert, said the player skipped a voluntary workout four days before the incident while nursing a sore shoulder. He was ordered to sit in the middle of the gym and eat an entire pepperoni pizza, Gilbert said. He was allowed to remove the pepperoni and some of the cheese, but pork residue remained, Gilbert said.

All I can say is I wish my high school coach punished me by making me eat pizza. Best punishment ever.

Well, someone is lying here. The kid felt good enough to skip a previous workout so why should he feel pressured enough to eat a pepperoni pizza. But they did fire 6 employees so maybe the kid is telling the truth.

So we’re just going to completely invalidate the kid’s religion because it isn’t our own?

Sounds like the MSB is back

Also this from the article

quote:

Peter Pattakos, an attorney retained by Wattley, said details of the events were exaggerated and parts are false. His statements were supported by five football players who attended the school board meeting in support of the eight coaches.

Pattakos and the students said the player could have left at any time, adding that Wattley offered the teen chicken nuggets instead of pepperoni pizza after the player said he did not eat pork. They said the player chose to take off the pepperoni and eat the pizza.

I think you left out some of the article

So you're just going to not actually read the article?

Seems like there is two major sides to this:

1) the player is telling the truth and the coaches made him do something against his religion which is massively offside and deserves firing and OP is a moron

2) the player is lying and actually didn’t have to eat the pizza at which point the player is a giant douche and should be kicked off the team and OP is still a moron for not including that part

bullshite. He probably ate the pizza because he wanted to and the lawyer is telling him say he was forced. Scum bags.

Taking out the religious aspect, I'd fire the coach purely for coming up with such a stupid arse punishment.

"Oh you missed a voluntary workout?!? NOW YOU HAVE TO EAT A FULL PIZZA!"

WTF is that even supposed to convey to the player?

It does seem weird that they would fire multiple coaches though.

Good grab. I honestly didn't even read the full thing. Just king of skimmed through it and thought it was a funny story.

I imagine they make them eat a bunch of pizza and drink lots of water then run the hell out of them afterwards. How will this team be able to compete without Ira Horowitz in the backfield next season ?

Yea this is the really odd thing with this. I'm guessing maybe they are firing them all if they were all present during it?

Then yeah, he should be fired. That's an idiotic caveman move that does frick all to help the player or the team.
