The teen's attorney, Ed Gilbert, said the player skipped a voluntary workout four days before the incident while nursing a sore shoulder.
He skipped a voluntary spring football workout. While obviously that does show a serious lack of commitment and dedication, it’s a voluntary workout in the spring, half the point of those is to see who shows up so you know who cares.

He was ordered to sit in the middle of the gym and eat an entire pepperoni pizza
Wtf kind of punishment is this? Make the kids do extra running or something, this is just humiliating a kid and serves no purpose

Pattakos and the students said the player could have left at any time

The teen would have been subjected to additional drills and his status on the team might have been jeopardized if he had not followed Wattley's order, Gilbert said.
So do this or you’re off the team, that’s not a real choice, sounds like the coach was trying to make him quit. Also there’s precedent for this type of thing and it’s been decided legally this isn’t a real choice, he couldn’t actually “leave whenever he wanted” or he would’ve been off the team

Wattley offered the teen chicken nuggets instead of pepperoni pizza after the player said he did not eat pork. They said the player chose to take off the pepperoni and eat the pizza.
Sounds like the coach is an idiot for offering a pepperoni pizza to a Jewish kid that can’t eat pork, how about knowing your players? They’re high school kids, form a relationship.
Regardless of religion here the coach should be fired for treating his football program like a fraternity and hazing his athletes, he clearly doesn’t know how to handle kids.

Can you expand on this? How is it not a real choice? He had the choice not to eat the pizza as well as leave the gym. If he feared the coach that much then why did he miss a workout?

I know there’s debates about what is real and what is made up with this story, but I think the coaches that make kids eat junk food after missing a workout are douches in general

Also, Hebrew Israelites are neither Hebrew or Israelite.

Doesn't it say he could have eaten chicken nuggets too? Why didn't he choose the nuggets?

Put yourself in his shoes. He could technically leave but that means being off the team which would not only be embarrassing but also obviously he likes football enough to play. School sports are incredibly important for a lot of kids, giving them a choice like that isn’t a real choice.
It’s like the fraternity pledges who drink himself to death because they’re told to do something crazy. To us it seems obvious just don’t do it and leave, but in that moment to them being a part of the organization is the most important thing and I’ll do pretty much anything to do that

To me it doesn’t matter, it’s a ridiculous punishment to give a kidRegardless of his religion. The religious thing just shows that the coach doesn’t really know his kids, why is he even offering pork to a Jewish kid? He must not know his player very well

Kid’s a whiny schmuck. His people love courtrooms.
