The Camden Panthers and Manasquan Warriors were facing off in a New Jersey Sports Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Group 2 semifinal game on Tuesday. The winner was set to earn a trip to the state championship game.

Camden made a free throw with 5.8 seconds left to break a 45-45 tie and go up 46-45. Manasquan got the ball and dribbled down the court to attempt a potential winning shot.

Rey Weinseimer attempted a 3-pointer that missed, but Griffin Linstra got the rebound and made a putback for what initially went down as the game-winning shot to give Manasquan a 47-46 victory. However, the referees gathered afterwards and said that Manasquan’s shot came after time had expired. They awarded Camden a 46-45 win.

Despite the video evidence proving Manasquan’s shot came before the buzzer, NJSIAA rules state that video cannot be used to review game decisions.

The NJSIAA issued a statement on Wednesday in response to the blown call that began receiving national attention. They admitted the error but said they could not change anything.

“NJSIAA understands Manasquan’s frustration regarding the outcome of last night’s game. We never want a contest to end with controversy or confusion,” the NJSIAA’s statement began.

“Here, all of the events happened within the final second of the game. One of the three officials counted the basket as beating the buzzer. The three officials then met at half court to confer. A second official saw the ball in the shooter’s hands when the buzzer sounded. The officials then waived off the basket. Later, after being shown video clips, the second official agreed the basket should have counted.

Watch the video. You can see the clock in the background with .5 seconds on the clock when the ball leaves the shooter’s (he’s in blue) hand. The ball goes through the net just as time expires.

That kid would have a lifelong memory of hitting the winning shot to go to the championship in a spectacular buzzer-beater. But because of one a-hole who can’t do its job, now that is gone.

Fire the whole lot of them and ban them from ever participating in games again. There are no checks and balances in these associations. Zero.

Kid learned has a lifelong memory of a dumbass that couldn't do his job, causing him pain. Sadly, he'll experience this many, many more times in his life.

Reverse the teams and this is a lead story on CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, NPR, etc.

This is pretty simple to me. Correct the call, allow the winning team to advance. It's the right thing to do.

In a just world, the other coach would forfeit their spot and protest, teaching his players a lesson in ethics and morality. Sadly, that's not what happens these days.

Didn't Camden get kicked out of the playoffs last year due to a fight? Looks liked someone owed them one and they got it. Officials have been pretty horrible everywhere. At the louisiana state semifinals last night Iowa and Brusly played the officials were horrible no flow to the game because a touch was a foul sometimes and a mugging was nothing two white guys and a black guy. So inconsistent all coaches and players want is consistency. If it was not a foul in the first quarter it still isn't a foul in the 4th quarter.

Yeah I don't think this is in any way race related. I just think the officials are completely incompetent. And on top of it, the state association is falling back on "rules" to avoid any responsibility of doing the right thing.

I agree. Totally incompetence related. Not even close to being correct. The ball is coming down over the basket with .01 left.

Terrible interjection of an idiot into the game.

Shot was ruled as good initially, then it was denied.

That's sad.

Reverse the teams and no doubt this is a racial issue used in an election year.

Officials likely saved someone's life with that wrong call.

Yes, they could if they really wanted to fix it.

maybe he was shooting the ball with time left, but it expired before going in therefore the game ended before the ball went in.

but im not sure about the rules on how that gets counted

either way, its beyond stupid not to allow video evidence, if it exists, to be used to get the calls correct
