Trout is in his 5th season (13 games)

Finished either 1st or 2nd in MVP voting during his first 4 seasons in the league.

Yes, he's done a good job accumulating WAR but there are a number of statistics that are trending the wrong way. He's struck out in 1/4 of his plate appearances over the last couple years. That's a very high number. He was -11 in DRS during the 2013 season and -12 in DRS in 2014. Last year, his defensive metrics were better but he was still only about league average in UZR and DRS. His stolen base number have deceased every year since 2012. In fact, he stole 11 bases last year yet he was caught more times last year (7) than all of 2012 (5 times) when he stole 49 bases. A legitimate case can be made that 2012 Trout is about as good as we'll get from him.

I think those are all valid points. Trout is losing some of his early defensive and baserunning value and the Ks are pretty high. That said, an average CF still provides a good bit more defensive value than an average or even above average RF. Plus I think Trout is offsetting alot of that lost value with more power as he ages. And I agree that 2012/2013 might be the best we ever see from Trout because he was worth over ten wins each of those years and that is really hard to do.

If you like Harper more, I totally get it. He is an absolute beast and still making leaps, but I don't see how you can say a case can't be made for Trout. One season and two weeks isn't enough for me to say that Harper is definitively better than the greatest age 20-23 player ever (who happens to be 24 now).

I really don't want to start the whole Trout vs Miggy debate from years back, but it really should be 4 straight MVPs IMO. Or at least three, since him and Donaldson was pretty much a coin flip last year.

Looks like Trout is struggling bad right now. He K's a lot and seems to be getting worse while Harper is getting better.

Donaldson was definitely deserving last year. I have been following his career for a few years, and I was thrilled to see him win.

Sadly, we are going to look back 15 years from and think, "Wow, how did Mike Trout only win X MVP awards?"

It's just two weeks though. Two weeks that happen to be at the beginning of the year and stick out like a sore thumb. Last year for the whole month of August, Trout hit a pedestrian .218/.352/.337, but still finished the year as the best hitter in the AL.

No doubt about it. I really think it was 50/50. They both deserved it, but I have no qualms about Donaldson winning it.

Trouts 2nd or 3rd season of his career was incredible as well. The same year Cabrera hit for triple crown, Trout still had arguably a better offensive season. Im not looking up the numbers right now but will revisit tmw morning. Id say Trout and Harper are about as even as you can get right now as overall players.

They had nearly identical offensive seasons last year. Also, lets look at the last 2 seasons up until now total.
2014-today-
Trout - 167 XBH over 329 games for 82.2 XBH avg season at a .965 OPS
Harper - 117 XBH over 265 games for 71.5 XBH avg season at a .938 OPS

I still think when it is all said and done Manny Machado will have had the best career

I believe so, yes, since so much of Trout's value was tied up in his defense and speed, and athleticism peaks at an earlier age than power. Trout's game, as crazy as it is to say, is already declining while Harper is perfecting the offensive aspect to a degree we haven't seen since post roids Bonds was terrorizing the league. Harper is combining 80 grade raw power with elite bat control, plate coverage and strike zone awareness. He's nearly impossible to strike out right now.

Trout was the best player in the game the past 3-4 years, but over the next 3-4 it's almost unquestionably going to be Harper.

I don't know why you got two down votes for this comment. It's a bold prediction but not crazy by any means. People talk about finding the next Stephen Curry, an athlete who goes from being very good to being qone of the best ever. If there's one athlete who can take his game to the next level like that, it's Manny Machado. His improvement at the plate has been incredible and he's already one of the two or three best defenders in the game. The guy was a 7 WAR player last year and I still don't think he's even close to reaching his full potential as a player.

Also said this about Harper:

Harper is much more of a Ryan Howard type of hitter, low average but MONSTER power.

Update for the year:

Trout 1.6 WAR, 175 wRC+
Harper 1.0 WAR, 160 wRC+

Not saying this proves Trout is better than Harper or anything. I still think it is basically a coin flip going forward. Just find it interesting how quickly things can flip this early in the season.

Some folks were no doubt using the 1st 10-15 games of the season as evidence for Harper when this thread was made.

Harper was obviously better last season, but I think he'll have to do it multiple seasons before we can say he's definitively passed a guy who's done it for 4+ seasons now.
