Has Bryce Harper become the better player in comparison to Trout?

Yes

It should not be argued either. Harper's OPS last year at only 22 years old is once in a lifetime thing

As a hitter, no question. He's doing crazy stuff.

As is Trout's WAR through his first four seasons. I don't know which one is the best player alive right now, but I could make an argument for either.

Yes. Harper's 2015 was better than any season Trout has had, and he's not showing signs of slowing down. His plate discipline has improved by a large margin. Trout plays the premium position, but I would take Harper over Trout going forward.

Harper was slightly better last year.

really splitting hairs comparing the 2, though.

It is ridiculous how good Bryce Harper is, like he is doing unreal things at the plate. And he's only 23.

Harper had one of the most historic offensive seasons of all time at 22 years old

Slightly better last year Lester? I wish I had more than 1 downvote to give

I don't think WAR is necessarily perfect down to the decimal or anything, but Harper only had .5 WAR more than Trout last year.

Here are 7 incredible facts about Harper’s 2015 season:

1. It was the best offensive season since Barry Bonds retired Harper put up the type of numbers we haven’t seen much of in recent years, with pitchers dominating the Majors. Harper’s 1.109 OPS is the highest mark since Albert Pujols’ MVP 2008 campaign. But in context, Harper’s 195 mark in park- and league-adjusted OPS+ stands as the best season since Barry Bonds retired. And Barry Bonds, lest you forget, was an otherworldly hitter

. 2. No player his age has hit so well since Ted Williams Harper became one of only three players ever with an OPS+ of 190 or higher at age 22 or younger. The others? Ted Williams and Ty Cobb. Ted Williams! Ty Cobb! Bryce Harper!

3. He raised his career OPS+ over 20 points Harper entered the season with a very good 121 career OPS+. He finished it with a 143 career OPS+. To put that in context: In the course of one year, he went from Harold Baines to Harmon Killebrew. And smart money says it’ll keep climbing from here.

4. He showed way better plate discipline

Harper has credited his breakout campaign to his health, and it could be that staying on the field and getting more reps allowed him to work counts better and get better pitches to drive. But by whatever means he got there, Harper made an astonishing improvement. He entered the season with a 10.4% career walk rate, then walked in 19% of his plate appearances in 2015. Unsurprisingly, he also hit more line drives, more home runs and more extra base hits than ever before.

5. Only two other players his age have gotten on base so much.

Harper led the Majors with a .460 on-base percentage. It was the third best OBP ever for a player at age 22 or younger. The only players Harper’s age to ever post higher OBPs? Ted Williams and Jimmie Foxx. This is a theme: Harper had the type of season typically only seen by inner-circle Hall of Famers when they’re his age.

6. He became one of only seven players his age to hit 40 homers

This time a couple non-Hall of Famers sneak onto the list, but one of them is A-Rod and the other, Juan Gonzalez, likely would have got there if his career weren’t derailed by injuries by his early 30s. The others: Eddie Mathews, Mel Ott, Joe DiMaggio, and Johnny Bench.

7. He finally faced a pitcher younger than him

Until June, Harper had gone his entire professional career without facing a pitcher younger than him — including in his minor league rehab stats. Harper didn’t turn 23 until mid-October, and he’s already arguably the best hitter in the world. Buckle up, folks.

Harper's consistently OPS'd around 1.200 for about 5 months now. There have been zero signs of slowing down.

Trout also hasn't been elite defensively since 2012. He's an okay fielder but nothing special and he doesn't steal bases like he used to. Since Trout's all-around game isn't that much greater than Harper's, I really don't see how you can make a case for him at this point.

That is pretty much the only answer.

I think it is fair to say that Harper is the best hitter right now by a small margin, but Trout is still pacing to be one of the true inner circle all-time greats.

4 elite seasons vs 1.

If you add up Harper's career WAR including this year but minus last season, it equals Trout's single best season WAR, for a little perspective on their entire careers thus far.

I think you 100% have to see Harper sustain for more than 1 season + 12 games before deciding he's clearly better than a dude with 4 straight elite level seasons that I'm not sure we've seen put together by someone as young as Trout.

I mean he has put up 40 WAR over the past 4 years when he was 20-23. I think it would be pretty easy to make a case for him. Just as it would be for Harper.

this season its harper by a mile trout is hitting .220 without a bomb while harper has a higher OPS than last year and 6 bombs so far.....granted its only 12 games but harper reminds me of when you couldnt pitch to bonds or pujols in their primes.

Yes, he's done a good job accumulating WAR but there are a number of statistics that are trending the wrong way. He's struck out in 1/4 of his plate appearances over the last couple years. That's a very high number. He was -11 in DRS during the 2013 season and -12 in DRS in 2014. Last year, his defensive metrics were better but he was still only about league average in UZR and DRS. His stolen base number have deceased every year since 2012. In fact, he stole 11 bases last year yet he was caught more times last year (7) than all of 2012 (5 times) when he stole 49 bases. A legitimate case can be made that 2012 Trout is about as good as we'll get from him.
