Has Covid given a free pass to all CFB coaches in 2020?

In normal years, coaches X and Y would be on the hot seat going into the season opener. Yet most of these coaches will have had little prep time for their teams (and different preparation because of Covid [see Navy]) as well as opt outs and transfers (because of cancelled seasons that are now happening).

Does this make this year a "wash" for coaches?

They’d have to really screw up to be axed

Also schools are losing a lot of money in ticket sales and don’t have the money to fire a coaching staff and hire another one. It’s gonna be interesting to see if the financial fallout causes problems with the pro sports.

If a team that has a lot of promise totally tanks, and it's not directly related to COVID, then I can see a few hot seats by the end of the year.

It could depend on optics especially if the coach is perceived to have mismanaged COVID and was already on hot seat.

For example, Fuente has not been looked at favorably. Caleb Farleys accusations and then his lack of transparency on process.

I think the coach would
Already have to have been on the hot seat, at a program that wants and expects to win, and absolutely completely shits the bed.

I’m thinking Mushcamp at USCe would have to have a record of 2-8 or worse to get canned.

What other coaches are at programs that want to win that are already on the hot seat?

No university wants to justify a buyout that's for sure
It would have to be a coach that maybe doesn't have a huge buyout
If not, the coach is all but dead man walking

No NC contender that totally shits the bed will get a free pass. If Bama or tO$U lost four games, Saban/Day would catch a lot of shite. Not that they'd be fired, but they wouldn't get a "free pass."

Everyone’s job is safe this season, as long as they don’t come out to be a Trump supporter or something like that.

Muschamp's seat probably feels a bit cooler.

First thing that came to mind. I thought everyone was safe going in and then we get a firing week 1.

Now the issue for the big boys will be justifying massive buyouts while at the same time losing tens of million in revenue.

Would Auburn let Gus turn in a 5 win season? What about Muschamp at SCar? They'll be underdogs in 5 of their first 6 games. What does a 1-5 or 2-4 start do for him?

Depends on your conference... I guess most of the Bowl-tier guys are safe.

But what about those conferences that are still shut down, with smaller programs, that originally bought into the "play in the spring" plan? Specifically, the SWAC? The rest of the FCS?
Will they even be able to afford fielding a team? Do you have to pay a buyout if you shutter the program?

i don't see anyone with a decent buyout getting fired this year. the optics would be awful.
