re: Has a sport ever destroyed itself like NASCAR?

Like I said there were “unofficial” competition cautions. No, everyone didn’t have to come in, but if someone was too far ahead to where it was stinking up the show? The old timers like me remember all the phantom “debris on the track” cautions to close up the field and make it exciting.
And then there are the shenanigans like Richard Petty pulled at Dover in 1975 where NASCAR wasn’t involved but they stood by and let it happen. He had the fastest car but he cut a tire and had an unscheduled pit stop and it left Dick Brooks and Benny Parsons battling for the win. Then with about 10 laps to go Buddy Arrington, who was tight with the Pettys, stopped on the track where they had to throw a caution, allowing Petty to catch up and of course win the race. Everyone denied it but the talk was that the bill for a hauler Arrington had bought from the Pettys was marked “paid in full” after that deal.

They fricked up when they ran Carl Edward’s off in the biggest race of the year. Racing for a championship.

Brian France is an entitled piece of shite

Brian’s sister is the smartest, sharpest one of the bunch, she’s out of the same mold as Kelley Earnhardt, but they will never let her run the thing because she’s a woman. I’m not saying that for political or diversity reasons, I’m saying it because she would be the best person for the job. Meanwhile her 80-year-old uncle is in charge …

I would say F1 and IndyCar have a much better product.

When you go main stream and want big TV contracts you need to sell your soul. I've never liked Nascar, but I t used to be a niche sport, but they tried to market it to the masses and failed and turned off the support of its "faithful " fans.

Wasn’t the knock on NASCAR for years that the 1.5 mile tracks made for atrociously boring races?
Tracks like Las Vegas, Kansas, Texas and Chicago are all boring racetracks.

Especially with identical cars.

If any sport destroyed itself, it was US open wheel racing through the CART/IRL split.

I think athletes in most sports have been pampered. Maybe not a silver spoon, but the way star athletes are put on a pedestal as early as high school is a major problem.

Yep. Along with that they emphasized gimmicks and tried to orchestrate Game 7 moments at the expense of actual competition. The fans they catered too were the ones least invested and with the shortest attentions spans.

I always called those people "Jeff Gordon fans"
Posted on 6/29/25 at 5:55 pm to FightinTigersDammit
Do you realize it’s been 33 years since Gordon made his debut?

Same day the King made his exit, and Kulwicki won his title

I haven’t watched the Indy 500 in many decades

Cookie cutter cars. The only differences are the engine blocks. Drivers like Jeff Burton bitching and moaning about the cars being too fast. NASCAR fell victim to Network TV, PR and Advertising Firms. The Bubba Wallace phony noose debacle which FOX took and ran with without any proof. Too few powerful Ownership Groups that are the King Makers. It's funny that Roger Penske was in the forefront of the CART collapse, now he's front and center in the ruination of NASCAR. NASCAR has become as phony as the WWE/WWF.

The thing that gets me is how NASCAR will fine a driver for fights or retaliation using their car. That’s frowned upon by NASCAR, but they’ll sure use that clip for commercials promoting the exciting track.
