I guess with Dwight being in LA, they thought they need Perkins more than Harden.

Perkins would qualify for the Early Bird Exception I believe.

Right, they had two options.

Keep Harden, amnesty Perkins and go without a dominant center

Dump Harden, keep Perkins for the Dwight match-ups, try out multiple players in the Harden role and build more depth with mediocre picks in a horrible draft.

Or just sack up and pay the tax

very few teams could afford the payroll they'd be at, let alone in a small market with a small market local deal

Still don't buy it. They are already paying out a ton of money. One of the reports I read said they offered 4.5/year short of a max contract. Even multiplied (for luxury tax), I can't imagine that holding this back. They had a good chance for added revenue from playoff games and winning titles. Not a guarantee but more likely with him than without. Plus that core is what every franchise shoots for. Why buy a team if you are going to break that up. I'd be sick if I were an OKC fan. But of course, it is much easier to speculate about what I'd do with someone else's money.

they're already getting this revenue

this is the owners fault for the new luxury tax rules. the owners don't want to allow teams to be built with their drafted superstars for the long term. it's their own fault

We can still sign a max deal, and we have young players we can possibly trade. Plenty of flexibility.

Emmanuellewis has the same thoughts that I do. Everyone I've spoken to outside of this board feels that way as well.

there is one team who could afford that payroll under the new luxury tax, and it's the knicks

the knicks had the chance to get to that payroll level this past offseason and passed, so i don't know what other team would pay taht much money

I bookmarked this thread. If the thunder are as good as last yr I'll eat crow, but I just don't see the improvement they made with this deal.

LA is the front runner in the west now and I'm not saying that because I'm a lakers fan

This is very good for the Hornets...this makes the Rockets significantly worse for years to come. Harden is an upgrade over Martin, but not by as much as people make it seem. Giving up a young prospect in Lamb and other future picks was Morey being an idiot as usual.
Harden is a huge upgrade over Martin.

Martin is a good scorer, but an average basketball player.

Harden can shoot, he can score, he works well with the pick and roll, he plays great defense, etc., and he's only 23 years old.

Harden is a much better basketball player than Martin. To say otherwise is simply ignorance.

well in an ideal world they wouldn't have to trade harden, but if they didn't, they get nothing in return for him

mchale has the ball in the point guard's hands

Adelman does too. The difference is that McHale uses a lot more iso and Adelman uses a lot more off the ball screens. Martin still got the same number of open 3s in McHale's system, he just wasn't quite as good at knocking them down last year.

he was a catch/shoot player in mchale's system,

He was more of a catch and shoot player in Adelman's system.

which is why his FTs dropped by like 240

He was a master of the rip through move and that rule change hurt him a lot.

when martin is allowed to play his game, they're pretty close. but martin is made of glass and is a lot older
