He was about .500 at MSU until his last year where he led the team to 9-2. Would he have progressed to a Natty?

Seems like he was just beginning to build something solid.

Yes because Perles took them to Rose Bowl and laid a foundation of winning. He would’ve gotten the players he needed and had the support.

It definitely could have happened. Ohio State was on a bit of a downside from 99-01 and he could have gotten the best regional players and gone for the national big fish.

I think he bailed in part because it was tough to do year in and year out there. But, there is probably no reason he couldn't do what Dantonio did.

I seem to remember their fanbase was split on him when it came to holding the school hostage for money and resources.

Every school fan base splits when giving coaches raises generally

If Nick could have pulled some of those Ohio State recruits, yes. He is that good of a coach

2003 would have been his best shot, ironically

They would have to beat top 10Michigan and Ohio state. Top 25 Minnesota and Iowa. Along with media bump Norte dame

I think the media circle jerk around the big 10 would put them in over USC

The real question is how bad of a program could 06 Nick Saban be put in and not win a title within 5 years.

not after they win beyond a certain point

But no Saban never would have won a natty without Louisiana talent

Hell no. LSU made Nick Saban. I, for one, am ecstatic that we came together when we did. But, Saban needed that Louisiana pipeline to kickstart his process.

If he had stayed?

Probably not.

Would he have the cache? No...because there would've been no LSU and backyard Southern talent to make him a hot commodity.

Then he comes back to College after the NFL and gets another recruiting advantage being in the South again and at the South's biggest football school.

Lets not act like Nick didn't choose choice locations and the path of least resistance.

If he had never left Michigan State, he could just be another Midwestern coach struggling to get talent.

Now if he went to Michigan State NOW, that's a different story as he's built up his cache and brand...but could he have built that at Michigan State without the help of his other stops?

Doubt it.

No, I don't think so.

Was once a time when he and Kirk Ferentz (Iowa) were both respected equally and considered extremely sound and knowledgeable coaches.

Saban was ambitious, came to LSU (insane potential due to talent pipeline, as displayed when Kennison and Faulk murdered his Michigan State team in the Indy Bowl), established it on solid footing, went to the NFL, and ultimately landed at one of the most prestigious blueblood programs (Alabama) in the nation. He grew.

Ferentz was satisfied staying at Iowa, never grew. He's put a couple nice teams out there and they usually play disciplined, but he's fallen WAY behind Saban over the years.

If Saban had stayed at Michigan State, he's probably the same as Ferentz, respectable but doesn't contend.
