The WNBA currently has 12 teams, and according to a new report by Chantel Jennings and Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic, at least one more appears to be on the way. The Athletic spoke to WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, who brings word that the league has whittled down a list of 100 cities that could potentially get an expansion franchise to a list of 10-12.

According to Engelbert, the plan is to bring a new team to 1-2 of those cities, with an eye on having those expansion franchises begin playing in 2024.

Why, you say?

Well, the numbers bear it out. The New York Liberty, who play in our nation's most populous city, are averaging 4,069 people per home game this season. They can't get enough of their Liberty up there in the Big Apple! Based on this, it's a safe assumption other areas of the country would have a fervent interest in the WNBA.

The same thing is true in the Midwest. The Indiana Fever drew 960 people to their May 17 game against the Atlanta Dream! Wow!

Hershey, PA would be a great city for a WNBA team. They can be the squirts.

I bet those other 88-90 cities are absolutely distraught.

I want to see this list of 100 along with reasons why they can't average 2000 people a game like the rest of the league

Indiana has topped 2000 once.

The best teams average like 6000 of "paid" attendance.

Yet the players whine they're getting 250k plus a year

Curious how they are going to find two owners? Or are the NBA just going to run these teams.

Normally owners have to pay big money to expand into a league.

How much is the league funneling to the owners out of NBA basketball related income to start up two more of these losers?

The WNBA, a league so relevant that one of the teams is literally owned and operated by an Indian casino in the middle of nowhere.
