Yet everyone must see that there's no way university presidents/ADs/etc will agree to any system that doesn't give each BCS conference an auto bid into the playoffs.

You can't do that because SFP doesn't like arbitrary ranking systems except the BCS. It's like anti-playoff people create the worst possible playoff imaginable and then criticize that system for its flaws.
A conference champ only system removes arbitrary rankings, but its unacceptable because a "better" team will be left out, which is of course an arbitrary ranking. But thats when rankings are okay, to talk about the unfairness of teams left out of a hypothetical playoff.
