Why are they called trick plays? As far as I'm concerned they're plays just like any other.

Why not a 16 team playoff with 11 conference champs and 5 at large teams?

Exactly. Win your conference or STFU.
The goal is not to pick the best 8 teams for a playoff, it is to crown the best team in the country. Bama has already proven it is better than Florida over the course of the season by winning the SEC. Florida might very well be #2, but the goal of a playoff isn't to crown the #2 team. It's to crown the #1 team, and Florida has exactly ZERO claim that they are the best team in the country.
