quote:

Former Bears legend Gale Sayers died Thursday at age 77, according to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

“All those who love the game of football mourn the loss of one of the greatest to ever play this Game with the passing of Chicago Bears legend Gale Sayers,” Hall of Fame president David Baker said. “He was the very essence of a team player – quiet, unassuming and always ready to compliment a teammate for a key block.

‘Gale was an extraordinary man who overcame a great deal of adversity during his NFL career and life.”

I met him almost 20 years ago at a speaking engagement in Texas. I was only about 12 at the time but knew who he was. He took some time out to talk to me and sign a copy of his book for me. Very nice man.

The man was poetry in motion when he ran with the ball. Where running backs like Jim Brown ran over and through people, guys like Sayers and Walter Payton slid past them like slippery eels.

One of the best to ever don a football uniform.

RIP Mr. Sayers

Top 5 all time in my book... the only person that ran the football like him was Barry Sanders... he was graceful like a swan but ran like a gazelle.

RIP.....

I've only seen his highlights, but my father claimed he was the fastest and quickest player he'd ever seen. RIP Kansas Comet.
