Intelligent Parents aren't letting those kids have anything to do with football.

I started playing tackle football in 5th grade as it wasn’t an option younger. I won’t let my kids play tackle football younger than 7th grade, maybe 6th if they just really wanna do it, but even then, still probably won’t. I have lesions in sections of my brain, the first thing the neurologist asked me was if I played tackle football.

My brother works in surgery and a neurosurgeon even told him about a study that was done with football players that only played through high school and non football players I think no football or less than 2 years) The non football players was a very low % of people with lesions on their brain, football players, were much, much higher. He also said that the brain isn’t developed enough until around 12 to start taking blows to the head over and over again.

I would put him in tackle at 7th grade for sure.

Before that maybe not. See how he is developing. If he is a receiver or DB or QB it wouldn't matter too much anyways.

There are two high schools in a county near me here in NC that did not have enough players to field a team. There are not small schools either.

I am sick of the flag football stuff in my area. I hold full pad practices at my kids sleepovers so they can learn bull in the ring.

My wife says they hate me for it but they be beast come 7th grade.

Football should start at the junior high level. They can't lift weights at gyms until that age anyway.

Chapel Hill is a mess right now when it comes to interest in football. Numbers are definitely down overall, but several schools within 30-45 minutes are still at or above 100

I'm part of a NFL Flag league and we have grown to over 350 kids with 2 seasons a year. The local tackle league this year was under 200 for the first time.

We have a lot of kids that play flag til they reach 7th grade and then start tackle at school. Parents we talk to aren't as much anti tackle as they are playing tackle at an early age. Plus, many find it more fun at such a young age.

Ditto. My son is in a flag league and we have roughly 40+ teams from K through 5th, with each team having about 9 or 10 kids.

I'm not against him playing tackle when he's in junior high or high school (my wife is), but kids as young as 5 and 6 should not be playing tackle. I coach my son's team and 3/4 of the kids don't know basic football principles like positions, what they do, and even what a pass is. It's more fun, and you have the ability to teach the foundational elements of the sport.

I think the future health of football as a sport is tied to these youth flag leagues. Let kids develop their knowledge of the game and their skills, and then decide as a parent if you're okay with them playing take when they get to 6th or 7th grade.

It's easy to forget just how many options kids have today, even in small towns. When I was a kid, you could play football, baseball, or learn karate - that was it.

My kids can choose between those and lacrosse, soccer, MMA, wrestling, Ninja Warrior, etc.

I see a lot of athletes moving to lacrosse in Jr High and high school in my area, guess they think it's better than riding the bench in football.

Honestly I loved football as a kid but I probably won't let my kids play until the jury comes out on how it effects the brain. No point in fricking up a kids life when hes older when the chance of him making a living off it is super slim.

My 8 year old nephew is on a team here in Monroe and they have easily over 100 kids for the league.

If football continues to legislate th most injury causing hits, helmet to helmet, defenseless player etc..

remember 25 years ago blocking below the waist was legal all over the field.... soon i bet cut blocking even within the free blocking zone will be gone...

if football continues to legislate safety it will survive and thrive - if it does not it will end up like boxing.

those that say "oh that's not football" well back when I played and you played kids weren't this big, physical or fast.... 1981 first year the title games were in the dome.. John Ehret vs covignton -for the biggest classification each team had 5-6 players above 200 lbs..... now each of those have 5 BACKS over 200lbs...

It ain't the same game nope....and the rules need to reflect that...

or else....

now with football and nearly every other sport being a year round deal - that also kills interest.

skateboarding, bicycles, dirt bikes and atvs.. cause a much higher % of those type of injuries....

I only know one person making a living from skateboarding...

You aren’t hitting your head 20-30 times a day 2-3 times a week in practice, and then seriously hitting your 30-40 times on game day in those sports like you do in football.
