We just completed registration for our district's fall football teams.

9/10 year old team: 18 kids

7/8 year old team: 14 kids

5/6 year old team: 2 kids

Every child signed up for our 7/8 and 9/10 team has at least one year of tackle experience.

I am very curious to see if in 5-8 years, all of those current 5/6 year olds end up playing in middle school, or, if they will never play tackle.

I never played football growing up, but I remember tee ball and soccer being 5-6 years old for the first league. Basketball was 6, 7, and 8. I always assumed that was because most 5 year olds couldn't play basketball. I'm pretty surprised that football has a 5 year old option. I would have assumed the youngest age was 7 years old.

I meanni Am sure people will still play football

Start a 5-6 7 on 7 league and see who signs up.

No point in mashing your kids brain for 13 years if he isn’t going pro. Alternatively there are guys like Chaisson who started playing mid high school and made it to the next level.

So they didn't pick up any new players? Doesn't sound healthy for the sport.

Right

They’re 5

5 year olds aren’t doing anything with technique (unless they’re Asian playing drums or something)

They’re still getting jukes by 3’ y’all girls at that age.

The NFL is pushing their flag football thing hard in our area, and it's cut into bantam football big time. Haven't noticed much drop off in middle schools here yet though. I think alot of parents are having their kids play flag football or no football until they are in middle school are high school.

Good point. Fall baseball wasn't really a thing when I was a kid.

This is the first year I can remember we won't have a 5/6 team.

Our Pop Warner here in West Austin has seen a similar shift in the past five years or so.

We had 15 teams of 22-25 players back in 2012--> now down to 8 teams, with 6 of them being the older (4th - 6th grade) divisions.

That is correct. And I'd say half of the kids are brothers.

The number of parents in their 20s or early 30s with one son playing football is something approaching zero.

I'm part of a NFL Flag league and we have grown to over 350 kids with 2 seasons a year. The local tackle league this year was under 200 for the first time.

We have a lot of kids that play flag til they reach 7th grade and then start tackle at school. Parents we talk to aren't as much anti tackle as they are playing tackle at an early age. Plus, many find it more fun at such a young age.

5 and 6 year olds don't need to be playing tackle football.

Put them in a flag league

A neighbor of mine, former NFL QB, recently took over youth 2-hand touch league where they had 3x the amount of signups as 2 years ago.

The wifey said that a lot of parents are steering their kids toward other sports, including her kid even though his dad played in the pros. Interesting dynamic however you cut it.

Fall baseball

That's downright unAmerican. Baseball is a Spring/Summer thing......Fall is for football and maybe the start of some basketball. Is there nothing sacred anymore?
