Yes—and tonight’s outage is actually a good example of an important distinction with LED stadium lights.

The lights themselves weren’t the problem. The electrical supply feeding them was.

Here’s what appears to have happened at Doak tonight:

1. Doak uses LED lighting. FSU installed the system in 2023, with dimming, strobing and color-changing capabilities.
2. A stadium transformer failed during an attempted reset. ESPN reported that the transformer blew while officials were trying to restore/reset the stadium’s power.
3. That knocked out more than just the field lights. The press box lost power as well, and the replay system wasn’t initially available.
4. LED doesn’t mean the lights can operate without substantial electrical infrastructure. LED fixtures are much more efficient than the old metal-halide systems, but there are still hundreds of fixtures, control equipment, power distribution equipment and transformers involved. If the transformer supplying that portion of the stadium goes down, all those LEDs can go dark essentially instantaneously.
5. The advantage of LED comes after power is restored. Once the electrical supply is stable, LEDs can be brought back to full output very quickly compared with traditional stadium lighting. That’s one reason modern stadiums use them—they can also be precisely controlled for instant dimming, flashing and color effects.

So tonight’s situation isn’t really an indictment of the LED system. It’s more like having a brand-new LED lighting system connected to a failed electrical transformer—the light fixtures can be perfectly healthy while having nothing to power them.

And there’s an additional wrinkle: the game can’t simply resume the instant the lights come back. The officials need to make sure the lighting is stable, the replay/communications systems are functioning, and the teams get the required warm-up period.

If you’re watching the game right now, I can also explain why they couldn’t just run the stadium lights off a backup generator—that’s actually pretty interesting.

The cameras used for television broadcast cost about $200k - $275k each, not including the cameras. They let in a lot more light than is visible to humans. What you see on TV is the result of amazing optics and light sensitive imaging sensors. If you were there, you'd understand why they need more light to play the game.

No scoreboard. No helmet coms. Is this 1942?

All this sounds like bad wiring. With the bad craftsmanship everywhere these days, it is not a surprise.
