Someone had the rule book for next year and it appears that this will change even for non-sprint races.

I'll give the sprint races a fair chance, but I don't think I am going to be a fan. Like someone said, it will result in a procession and no one wanting to risk their car.

Also, only one set of tires can be used. Not sure if there is special consideration for punctures, but that will suck if someone clips your back tire and you have to retire while they get a wing change and 5 second penalty.

This always felt artificial to me. In the Austrian GP the reason for this rule came into stark focus, as most teams opted for medium tires in Q2, but AlphaTauri and Aston Martin chose softs to make sure they got into Q3. But doing that to ensure a top 10 starting position was a mistake as it was clearly the wrong strategy. Of the four drivers, only Gasly worked his way back into the points by the end of the race. This does make qualifying and the race more interesting and strategic, but it still feels artificial because teams are not choosing the fastest option in Q2, but the strategic option. Qualifying should be about sheer speed.

I don't like the mandate to use two compounds either. Back in the day, if Schumacher got pole position and led past the first corner, he would often do a three-stop race while everyone else did a two-stop race. If you can use softs for every stint (and the difference between the compounds are designed properly), then you'll see racing as it should be: all-out sprints in each stint, instead of long steady runs to preserve tires.

Fuel load was also a huge player. I get the danger of reintroducing fueling, but it was a great wildcard.

I would like to see a race with free choice on compounds.

Yes, refueling should be brought back. The drivers themselves prefer it. One of them recently mentioned how hard it is on the tires with a full load of fuel.

I was looking for an example of Schumacher doing a three-stop race vs everyone else's two-stop race, and found this article where he won a race with a four-stop strategy (vs a three-stop for Alonso):

France 2004: How Ferrari stole victory from Renault with a secret 4-stop plan

Back when there were two tire suppliers, it was all about sheer speed (so very soft tires), and with refueling it was natural to have more pit stops and more varied strategies. The good old days!

F1 is about to go live with the unveil of the 2022 car, for those of us like me who are procrastinating this morning.

Anybody know when the COTA shuttle tickets go on sale (or where I can get them if they're already on sale)?

Thanks!

So what’s the big deal with the new cars I’m seeing lots of backlash about it?

eh, I'm more concerned with how the hell this qualifying format is going to go this weekend. I have thought that F1's qualifying is some of the most interesting TV at times and they're changing it up why...?

I haven't seen any backlash, what are people saying? I think the car looks good and hopefully it has the desired competitive effect.

I'm curious if the new car is more compact or if they're still as long as a Chevy Suburban.

I don't really understand the gripes because I am new to F1. Is there a big change in the cars? I have looked into it and nothing seems that different.

The cars are massively different. This is a major change on par with 2009 and 2014, where dominance may shift to other teams.

The two main areas are shifting to more ground effect type setups and the rear wing pushing the air higher.

The goal with both is to allow the car trailing to not be as disrupted. Allows for less "dirty" air.

The hopes are it allows cars to follow closer and for more overtaking opportunities.

Some of what F1 has done has already helped. Max and Lewis have both been able to stay withing 2-3 seconds of each other, for long stints, without destroying their tires. That was unheard of 5 years ago.

New Aston livery for the weekend

Aston is concerned about how the car looks on TV. They might experiment more to bring back some of the pink.

Design should have a two fold effect, follow more closely in corners due to more clean air and more downforce and not get as massive of a tow on long straights due to more clean air and more downforce.

Looking at the car, I was trying to figure out how drs would work with that wing. wonder if drs will be moved from Creating less downforce on the rear wing (by opening it) to somewhere under the car or within the car.

This should allow for much better racing as cars can actually follow each other.

Still on the rear wing.

The cars will be similar to the concept, but expect the teams to be at different ends of the regulations.

Looks like the area around Spa took another round of crazy flooding rain. The track seems to be ok, but access to the track is severely disrupted. Canceling this weekends activities.

The race isn't until the end of August, but roadways are destroyed and thousands are out of their homes. Death toll is approaching 50 with many more missing.

I tripped over this video about the Red Bull / Honda power unit.

The narrator claims Honda will continue to upgrade and improve the power unit through the end of 2021, at Honda's own expense?

Apparently there's cars racing on the track today. Nurburgring area is fricked as well.

Spa has caught hell this year for sure though.

So I always try to not read too much into FP1 but with this new format I'm having a hard time not doing just that. A lot more action on the track than normal, Max smoked the field, Lando in P2, and Lewis is 0.7 off of Max. Holy crap.
