For non P5 teams, why has the triple option generally not expanded beyond service schools?

The entire rationale behind the service academies using it is that it can be run with undersized linemen and mediocre quarterbacks.
But most non P5 teams in America also struggle to recruit well sized linemen or capable QBs, so why do so many of these other teams still opt for air raid offenses or vanilla offenses?
Wouldn’t it make sense for a school that isn’t going to be bringing in lots of talent to run this?
At least the service academies generally annoy superior teams, especially in non-conference and bowl games: Army vs OU last year, Air Force vs mich in 2012 and 2017, etc.
I don’t have any data in front of me, but I absolutely think it would be a long term good move if a school like Miami Ohio, bowling green, or Nichols state would opt for the triple option offense

georgia tech, who is on the same tier as these schools, ran it for years

Talent is relative. Does a Miami (Ohio) really recruit that much worse than other MAC schools that it makes sense?

LSU played a triple option team last week.

They could honestly just recruit from South Lafourche and South Terrebonne to get all the players they need for this offense

Yes some other teams run it, but it is still relatively rare even among “inferior” teams
I just feel like if you are miami Ohio and you are facing a big ten team your first game, as you often do, you’d have a better chance of springing the upset if you were a triple O offense instead of a worse version of a typical big ten offense than defenses know how to defend easily

It was more beneficial when more high school teams ran option style offenses.
You still see that, but also high school teams are going spread more.
You can block just fine running spread and can beat better talent with that style.

Because as talent consolidates, it is not an effective strategy. Best example was the year Ga Tech played LSU in the bowl game. Paul Johnson was on his game and still got beat by LSU.

Hell NO! I was there when from 2005-2009 when Nicholls ran the triple option. You have to have a good qb to run that offense which showed in the 2004 season and 2005 conference champion season. After Vannoy left Nicholls couldn't get a solid qb to run triple option. All qbs they brought in came from spread offenses in hs. The 2005 season Nicholls had 2 wr's over 6'3" and would still only throw a hand full of times.
Nicholls has been doing great since Rebowe took over, no need to change.

The non conference games you have a week to figure out how to defend the triple option. When you play a team every year for a conference game, you are able to figure out how to stop it easier.

Georgia Tech was known as a triple option school for years.
Georgia Southern has run the triple option for a long time.
Those are two off the top of my head.

Frankly I don’t know why there isn’t at least one lower team per conference running it. Georgia Tech Had a couple 10 win seasons with it and made their conference championship game. It can be tough to prepare for on a one week basis and while you might not upset bama with it it’s not common enough nowadays to get shut down weekly and some bottom feeders could make some bowls with it.

Been there, done that, hope they never go back to that.

Think about the coaches.
Not a lot of them have experience playing or coaching in a triple option offense.
Most non-P5 coaches would love to get an opportunity at a big time P5 program, and being known as a triple option coach likely limits their potential to be hired at a more elite level program that doesn't have a problem recruiting top tier linemen and QB's.

South Lafourche barely has enough players to field a team this year, and even Curlin has expanded his offense to include more of a spread.

I've thought Kansas should try it ever since they fired Mangino. They're overmatched every week in the Big 12.

That’s similar to the rationale behind variations on the spread and many HS especially in Texas are running the spread
