ah yes, eliminate his human agency by equating his value as a human being within the confines of an arbitrary set of rules that makeup a game. you did it, you cut through all the bullshite and called a spade a spade.
this has nothing to do with the symbolism of machismo-infused American culture bring the question of sexuality tot he forefront of one of its most masculine arenas.
congrats here's your nobel prize.

I just think if you were a gay man and wanted to make stand for gay rights it would be to come out in the prime of their career.
I see what you're saying. I just think that most athletes want to me recognized for their skill set and not the fundamentals of their identity.
That's why Billie Jean King, as she has stated in the past, chose to not come out at all until she was essentially forced to in 1981.
Robbie Rodgers, a US soccer player, came out when he was 25 and has had to retire because of it.
I know these are just anecdotes and conjecture but my guess is that athletes want to be seen primarily as athletes, not as gay.

Meh, he's technically not a part of the NBA right now. Call my cynical but it smells like a guy trying to capitalize on his own personal sitch. Why not come out in his first season? In his first 5 seasons? Who cares?

good for him, but I could GAF

I don't need to. Common sense tells anyone with two brain cells why he waited until he was 34 to come out.
Besides, wasn't the dude on the 49rs the first openly gay player to come out? How is this different if the guy is averaging less than 4 pts a game and isn't on a team right now? Who is going to sign him based on being 34 years old and getting 4 pts a game, sexual preference aside?

Cool, you can just jump to what ever conclusions you want to then. It's not like the article addresses the very issues you are seeking answers to.

It's still unprecedented for an active player to come out..even though he's a marginal player
He actually isn't an active player, he's a 34 year old free agent who sucks and probably won't be picked up by anyone.

Who? Jeff Garcia?

Perhaps it's easier to take this risk when you're 34, have already played 12 years in the league, and have made a good living. If he makes a team, great, and if he doesn't, he'll know his sexual preference didn't derail his career. But continue to question his motives if it makes you feel better about the situation.

Nah, some OL. I don't think he's even on the team anymore.
He got outed because he got into a fist fight with his ex-boyfriend at a restaurant

Pretty sad. There really is no indication why anyone should question his motives. If he was a FA and the fifteenth gay athlete come out, I could see a few points.
But, the same people who are saying they don't give a frick, are the same ones worried about his motives for coming out. I smell bullshite.

Yeah I don't think this deserves a sportscenter update to go off on my phone.

why are we eliminating kwame harris's story b/c he wasn't good enough to perform within the arbitrary confines of football?

Probably teams thinking the same thing when they signed him at 33, 32, 31...
