Are there any statistics showing how much guys like John Amaechi and Kwame Harris profited by coming out?

well kwame harris kind of got busted and had to

amechi turned his coming out into a book

since even most NBA fans didn't really know who he was by this point, i'd assume the pub is the only reason this book sold anything

When this guys doesnt get picked up by another NBA team, it wont be because he's gay. It will be because of the distraction (media or otherwise) of having a gay guy on the roster. Its no different than most NFL teams not wanting to pick up Chad Johnson because his production is not worth the distractions he comes with.

True, but you and I both know that if this guy doesn't get picked up by an NBA team, the media and other rebel-rousers will instantly conclude that it is because he is openly gay, not because he is a 34 year old career back up averaging 4.0 ppg and 4.0 rpg. Everybody will continue to press for more players to come out, and then crucify any team(s) who decides to release/cut a gay player as doing so solely out of bigotry and discrimination (regardles of the player's actual skill level and/or lack of on field production). Teams with gay players on thier rosters will essentially be held hostage to keep the player in order to avoid bad press and claims of discrimination.

in a sport where a single player called another a cancer patient, and said another's wife tasted like honey nut cheerios, i don't see how these are shocking comments

Is that what your entire argument is based on?

what argument? i was responding to a comment about the need for increased instances...and saying that's difficult due to raw #s

That a majority of gay athletes are pushed out at a very early age?

oh i think gay male athletes are clearly pushed away from competitive sports at an early age

if they weren't, why is this a big deal? the everlasting acceptance of professional athletes?

well the NBA is full of a bunch of morons anyways. Those type of comments were made by TPOS'. However, simply because a man or woman prefers their own kind, shouldn't hinder their ability to be signed.

possibly, but if it's a locker room distraction then there is a reason not to sign them

I'm glad Jason Collins came out. I hope more gay athletes do the same now.

Does Jason Collins have plans to write a book?

It seems like common sense to me that he merely decided to come out when it would have the least impact on his career. Now that he's at the end of the road, there's no real risk.

i dunno. it wouldn't shock me if he used this publicity to latch onto some gay cause...possibly he becomes a public speaker on the issues. writing a book may be too amaechi

Collins basically mentioned this in the article as a reason for coming out. He didn't want to be outed.

I'm not sure how much he would "profit" on this. If anything, it sounds like a selfless thing to do.

What's there to say that hasn't already been said in the article? I guess he could make a "top 10 dicks in the NBA" list. That would probably generate some heat.

I will never understand why someone chooses to be gay, especially a guy that makes good money and could pull some tang. I have been told by a guy that chose to be gay its an attention thing.

People don't choose to be gay, IMO. But that's a topic for another day.

Only college football fans are dumber than NBA fans. This post is why (along with the SEC Rant).

can you imagine being this dudes boyfriend? Dude goes to work every day, gets paid to bang around with the biggest most in shape athletes in the world, takes showers with the guys with the biggest dongs in the world, then comes home to you to complete his sexual needs. Talk about a tall fricking task of water to drink.
