As an Irishman from family lineage... I am proud of the moniker. I like the idea that my past had some spit and fire in their attitude, it’s that’s bit of anger that pushed them through..real or not doesn’t matter

From the looks of it that is 1 random guys random opinion. It doesn't sound like a mass movement at all.

quote:

“When the Irish came to America, they were second class citizens. There were signs in windows that stated “No Irish. No dogs,'" he writes.

“This, their welcome to a nation with streets paved with gold, as they fled the genocide of Black 47. As they left an island stolen from them, a language eradicated, a culture razed they came to the United States and weren’t trusted for their religion.

"This, in a land built on the basis of freedom of religion. They came to the United States on coffin ships. They lived in slums. This, to build the United States up for someone else.

“So, yes, it bothers me that the term “Fighting Irish” is used for a nickname. It bothers me that its origins are based on stereotypes, and trying to make the Catholic team seem lesser than their opponents. It bothers me that their mascot and logo are a leprechaun with his fists up like he’s John L. Sullivan.”

Agreed. I’m proud of my Irish heritage. It represents a lineage of people willing to fight even when the odds are stacked against them I look at the Fighting Irish mascot as a sign of strength as mascots should represent.

That is part of the problem. All these entities capitulating to a few that are noisy. If these entities would just ignore the noise, they would see things won't change very much at all.

I, too, am from Irish ancestry. I hate ND, but getting rid of Fighting Irish is stupid.

Maybe we should defer to, you know, actual Irish people on this one? Just like we should be doing for everything else.

Edit: The Sioux name was changed because only one tribe was ok with it. But the Seminoles received the ok from their tribe to continue using it.

As are the Seminole Indians for FSU. The political correctness in this country jumped the shark a long time ago.

Yup...I corrected my post on North Dakota above.

But does this mean that at some point in the future, we'll need to get the buy in from every team name that represents a profession or person? Cowboys, et al?

I guess this whole thing just confuses me...these classes/races/types of people want representation and respect, and these nicknames do just that. Would you name your team after something you hate? frick no. Let's weed out the stereotypes and caricatures, but many of these capture proud and strong people. We'll change away from all these native american names and then the next round of outrage will be because people of color aren't represented in team names or logos. Just wait.

And I'm terrified they're coming after the Blackhawks next
