I was a fairly decent kicker/punter back in high school, and practiced my “free kick” all the time. I would regularly remind my special teams coach and head coach about the free kick. (Tbh I annoyed the shite out of them about it) - I had the distance easy from our own 45 and in...

Had one possible opportunity right before half once and I was very hyped, screaming “fair catch! Fair catch!” But the other team’s shorty punter shanked it out of bounds :(

Is that 55 or 65 yards? That would have been awesome to get an uncontested kick from distance.

I officiate and our white hat has been officiating about 45 years. I believe he said he has seen it twice.

Is it because effectively time has to end on that play...or be within 5-10 seconds of ending? Otherwise you would go for the return and a easier field goal at least?

I played soccer with a kid who hit a 61 yarder back in 97. Ended up kicking off for my college, has a sweet 99 sec championship ring to show for it. Never did get a college fg attempt. He did try a 74 yarder in h.s., came up about 5 yards short

Yup. Did this in high school game back in 2004. Team we were playing for some reason decided to attempt passes in stead of running the ball to run out the clock and go to OT. We were able to save a timeout and coaches instructed the punt returner to fair catch the punt. Attempted a 44 yd free kick with 4 seconds left

My son is just starting his real kicking journey, but he’s been practicing for a good 5 years. He’s been to a couple of camps and had private instruction from professional coaches...but this summer will be the kickoff to his class of 2025 recruiting saga. He’s expecting to be in the top handful of that class. We shall see.

I’ll get him to talk to the head coach about this.

Let us know how that works out

My son will be a high school kicker for the next 4 years, I’ll get him to talk to the head coach about this. No way they can’t, at some point, pull this off. Be an incredible way to break, or tie, the state record of 59 yards.

worst days of your son's life:
1) 8th grade football season cancelled
2) head coach not giving a single frick about a 14 year old telling him about a free kick

His chance to kick for the varsity team in the playoffs, as an 8th grader, was scrapped because some kid who sits next to him in science tested positive.

I’m pretty sure the head coach cares more about his development at QB than his kicking stats...but I’m sure they’d jump at a chance to set a state record if at all possible.

Drop kicks are even more rare.

What’s the point of the drop kick..to get the defense to show their hand on a 2 point conversion? If they come out in a defense you want to attack, you go for two...if your called play will be covered the QB just pooch punts it?

Yeah in theory the QB can check to see if the 2PC is there, and if it's not there just take the 1 point.

The thing is, back in the day the ball was much rounder and easier to predict the bounce. The way the ball is shaped now makes it way more difficult

Would be an interesting rule to apply in NFL. It’s already a rule for fair catching the punt and attempting field goal. But, what would be interesting is if a team could kick a field goal on the yard line the punt lands even if out of bounds. If punt is returned, no field goal would be allowed (same thing as today).

Yes. I’ve seen it several times in HS but it was never successful.

Pretty cool to have a few things that prove the sport evolved from Rugby.

Australian punter for the Seahawks dropped kicked a couple of kickoffs a few years ago when their kicker was injured.
