Ever heard of a ‘free kick’ in football, high school or pros?

I was researching the high school state distance records for field goals and every kick in this list with a single asterisk is a free kick.

Free kicks, apparently come after a fair catch...the alignment looks like a kickoff though. Nutty.

Sorry the links are so fricked up. Apparently it’s tried much more in high school since a ton of the records are off of them.

Heard of it, yes.
Seen it happen, no.

Yeah it almost happens like once a year in the NFL, seen it actually go down a handful of time before half

Fair catch free kicks are rare and I don't think I've ever seen one converted.

Yes. We did it was in HS back in 87. Right before halftime the opponent was punting from the end zone with a few seconds left on the clock and our coach told our guy to fair catch.. Next thing we know they were telling the KO team to go out on the field. We are at the 28 yard line. Everybody including the opposing coaches were confused and it took a couple of minutes to explain to the other coaches what was happening. We (players) and the fans didn’t know either. Anyway, we kicked it through the uprights for 3 to go up 13-10 going into the halftime.

Also, Bremen HS in Georgia did one about 3 years ago. Jake Verity kicked one through from 63 yards.

My son will be a high school kicker for the next 4 years, I’ll get him to talk to the head coach about this. No way they can’t, at some point, pull this off. Be an incredible way to break, or tie, the state record of 59 yards.

We used to practice fair catch punt return then end practice on a made kickoff field goal during walk throughs every Thursday. Never once did one in a game. But dammit we were prepared to if it ever happened.

That’s a bit strange...running start to a tee’d up ball, no holder. No wonder the state records are so far. That’s not a placekick like the pros try.

He’ll be QB too, but hopefully he doesn’t have to do that his freshman year.

Bleacher report article, weirdest moments in Cardinals history
Of course it was Linehan
quote:
What is a fair-catch free kick?
Many football fans have no idea what this rule is. After all, the very specific circumstances that must arise for it to be feasible have enabled it to be used just 10 times since 1970.
So what is it?
Basically, when a team fair catches a punt, they have the option to run a play or perform a "free kick": an uncontested field goal from the spot they caught it at where the opposing team isn't allowed within 10 yards of the kick. So, there needs to be a sufficient combination of a small amount of time left in the half, good field position and benefit in the scoreline to make a free kick beneficial to the kicking team. And even then, the punting team needs to not recognize the situation and kick to them instead of kicking the ball out of bounds.
In Week 3 of 2006, all of these factors arose. The Cardinals trailed the Rams 16-14 when the Rams punted. Troy Walters fair caught the ball at the Cardinals 33-yard line, but the Cardinals' Robert Griffith was offsides. Thinking the game was over because the time had expired during the play, inexperienced Rams' coach Scott Linehan declined the penalty.
However, yet another caveat to the fair-catch free kick rule is that, even if the time has expired, the free kick can be taken. So as the referees let Linehan in on the rule, kicker Neil Rackers prepared himself for an unprecedented 77-yard field goal attempt to win the game.
In the end, though, the kick was never taken when the referees incredibly allowed Linehan to renege on his declining of the penalty, accept the penalty and send his offense to kneel and end the game.
Of course it was Linehan

Didn’t Doug Flutie do a free kick for the patriots

Saw it once. Think it was Tom Laundry and the Cowboys. I was confused as shite and the announcers struggled with an explanation.

I think that was a 'drop kick' but could be wrong

That was a drop kick on a PAT. It came against the Saban Dolphins team and even Saban thought it was really cool.
