ESPN needs marbles, jelles marbles and ratings go thru the roof.

LOL, no seriously, we just need live sports.

Is this a lot? Not trying to be a dick, but how does it compare to other streaming services? Also, I wonder how many of those subscribers got it with the Disney + bundle.

It looks decent compared to the non-Disney options. YouTube TV or Sling are the biggest non-Disney options with sports, and they're both between 2-3 mil.

It's not a shocker. They changed from ABC to ESPN, changed the airdate, went from live to taped, didn't hand out sports awards because of incomplete seasons, there aren't live sports to advertise on...there were a lot of reasons why this was destined to fail.

I'm sort of surprised they went ahead with the ESPYS at all.

yeah I get you might be desperate for content but this had massive fail written all over it, I'm not sure why they even bothered.

I'm sure some did tune out due to the political nature but I think most tuned out because it seemed even more pointless than the normal ESPY's

What's also important, from ESPNs view, is that its growing at a decent rate

This year's ESPYs had fail written all over them. Not only are there no sports, but they moved them up for no apparent reason. Then you add Rapinoe, Sue Bird, and Russell Wilson as hosts? Nah. Rapinoe and Bird are zealots and Wilson is just bleh (great QB, though).

I think the lack of live sports hurt awareness that it was even happening. I wouldn't have known they were happening (although I never really watch) without this board.

Usually, ESPN uses live events to push the ESPYs, but they couldn't do that this year.

Everything lined up for minimal viewers.

It's also that nobody really give a crap about the ESPY's.

When it was about sports and great athletes doing well on the field, it was a great awards show.

Then they gave a courage award to Bruce Jenner 40 years after he retired from athletics for cutting his dick off.

I would be leary of the tech giants tho. I am sure they are wanting a piece of the sports streaming market.

Disney is pretty formidable itself.

Biggest problem with the ESPYs - they're uninteresting and not viewed as a prestigious award by general viewers.

Considering other non-sporting events have been huge hits....

- NFL draft coverage
- The Last Dance
- McGwire/Sosa battle

Most people knew based on who was hosting it was going to be political and even those who normally would still watch are probably burned out on politics right now.

Are they fan votes? I can't remember.

It should be like the Academy. They need to have 1,000 or so professional athletes proportionally represented in their membership, both current and past, that vote for these things.

I 100% would've watched had I not known ahead of time that it was going to be a political suckfest.

Other than European soccer and Nascar, which most Americans don't care about, there hasn't been sports in 3 months.

Do you think this problem is only 3 months old?

The ESPN Nominee Selection Committee gives us the nominees for each award, then the fans vote on the selected nominees to decide the winner.
