“Monday Night Football” is often at the mercy of luck, when it comes to ratings.

Unlike the ABC/Howard Cosell days of “MNF,” there are other options. If a matchup stinks, ratings suffer. We’ve heard such nonsensical arguments for NFL ratings declines the past two years that we forget the math is generally pretty easy: good games = more viewers.

ESPN did pretty well with its games this season, and as a result the ratings had a really nice increase.

ESPN said on Thursday that ratings were up eight percent from last year for “Monday Night Football.” It averaged 11.8 million viewers per game, which is stellar.

Good games + good markets = more viewers. Always been the case.

Didn’t the NFL throw ESPN a bone by putting better games on Monday night this year?

I long for the days when football was only football, not a political litmus test.

I think the lesson to be learned is that announcers are irrelevant.

Great announcers, Good announcers, terrible announcers, people don't give a crap, they want to watch their teams.

Absolutely nobody watches or doesn't watch because of the announcers.

this is 100 percent true. it's all about the games. For all the complaining on here... no one cares. If the game is good, we watch, if it's not, we don't.

Those ratings don't indicate who watches the game with the sound turned off.
