"Quarterbacks are not usually a one-year, plug-and-play position," Drinkwitz said. "Michael Penix, Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix all took a year. Look at Joe Burrow -- it took him two years, too. The one-year plug-and-play has not had a whole lot of success. I think some of these programs are going to be taking big risks."

I think he's right. Trying to grab a guy from another program and get him into the system for just 1 year without that time to mesh with receivers, learn an offense, get acclimated to a new school etc. doesn't seem to be smart.

Good thing we don’t do that. I don’t think any coach wants to have a starting QB for one year.

Penix was damn good in '22 as well. He led the nation in passing and total offense.

I get his point and you'd probably want a guy who had a couple years, but it kinda depends on the circumstances. Some guys are kinda "damaged goods" (Jayden, Nix), some haven't played much (Burrow). Some can do well right off like Penix, Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray or Jalen Hurts.

Might want to tell that to the guys calling for transfers with 1 year of eligibility left.

Penix and Bo were pretty good at their schools last year too.

Can Newton
Russell Wilson
Caleb Williams
Baker Mayfield

Depends on the situation. It's not ideal, but sometimes it needs to be done.

Ex. Auburn 2019

I liked Gus, but that was absolutely a natty caliber defense. There's no way I'm trotting out true freshman Bo Nix at QB and basically wasting that defense, I don't care who his daddy was.

Those guys aren’t the decision makers. Moot point.

Both were notably better this season too, though'

Caleb Williams

A bit of unique situation considering he followed his coaches and a receiver followed him as well.

Baker Mayfield

Keep in mind he sat out a year before starting at OU. He also was even better his 2nd/3rd year at OU vs. 1st year starting.

We all know there are exceptions, but I don't think many would argue Drink's point in general that it usually takes a year to get the best out of a QB.

Penix, Nix, Mayfield and Williams were all 2+ year guys. Newton and Wilson were 1 year guys who excelled very quickly. Sometimes you hit lucky on guys if fix a similar system you run but for the most part it's rare to find this anymore. I would say Caleb Williams is the closest to that but he followed Lincoln Riley.

I think if all else is equal, you’d definitely take a guy with 2+ years over a guy with 1 year. All other things are not equal in reality, though.

If you look at guys like Daniels, Nix, and Penix, it’s easy to say “yeah, they were better in year 2.” But the better question is whether they were an upgrade over the schools’ alternatives in year 1.

I’m thrilled that Daniels came back and had this kind of year, but that doesn’t mean that taking him would have been a negative if he had gone pro instead. Most people thought he was a one-year “rental” QB.

The same can be said for Burrow. If he hadn’t come back for 2019, would that have somehow invalidated the decision to go get him in 2018? I don’t think so.

Ultimately every case is going to be different and the coaches will have to weigh the pros and cons.

this is a “it takes time to get acclimated” argument not a “players get better with time” argument

With an experienced QB would have been the greatest threat to our perfect season.

Even with Leary not playing to expectations, Kentucky would’ve been fricked without plugging him this season. Like 2 win season fricked. Destin Wade was terrible as a QB. And everyone else transferred out. Sometimes it’s a necessity to keep consistency within a program.

Hoping the combo of Coen staying at OC, some good HS QBs coming in, and two years with Vandergriff coming in will help stabilize that position more for us.

Daniels went from looking undraftable to probably winning the Heisman and being a Top 10 pick in his second year, same with Burrow.

At Notre Dame the offense was marginally better at best with Hartman.

Not saying a one year rental couldn't help a team win but I would imagine it will be the exception and not the rule.
