CBS Sports: Coronavirus in college football: Hospitalizations, deaths projected by data analysts if FBS plays in 2020

quote:

A noted University of Illinois computer science professor has some troubling data to consider regarding widespread infection and even death. Dr. Sheldon Jacobson told CBS Sports he expects a 30%-50% infection rate of the approximately 13,000 players competing in FBS this season. Based on his research, he also projects 3-7 deaths among those players due to COVID-19. "A few of them could end up in the hospital, and you'll have a small number who could die," Jacobson told CBS Sports. "I don't want to sugar coat it for you. I just want to give you the facts.

I guarantee someone is going to die," Jacobson said. "The virus does not discriminate."

Are 18-23 year olds dying at that kind of rate or is he just applying overall deaths and then taking a percent!?

Jacobson made his projections from CDC data that estimates one death per 1,000 people who have symptoms in the college age group (18-22). Taking into account that range and medical care provided for football players, the death rate would be lower than the general population, Jacobson said.

I doubt he’s wrong.

Playing college football doesn’t mean you’re at the pinnacle of health.

I'm genuinely curious as to how that compares to other illnesses and injuries. It seems like every year there are a few players that die due to various causes. So the question to me is playing during this corona pandemic putting the players at an undue risk?

Yup. One or two fat guys or some kid with an underlying condition he didn't know about will die and that's the end of the season.

So, these 6,500 players that get infected are all guaranteed to not get it if football is cancelled?

What this doesn’t factor in is how many extra players get will covid from playing/participating compared to just living on campus.

College kids aren’t going to stop hanging out, football or not. If colleges have students back on campus covid is going to run through the student population.

Is there really a difference if a player gets covid from playing or gets it from a house party? Plus you’d think football teams will be a lot stricter about protocols than average college students

I was under the impression that it did discriminate.
