They started 0-2 but one of their losses was to D-1 ULM that has been at least a respectable team the last few years. ULM beat the crap out of Grambling a few years back when they weren't even decent.

What's attendance been like for Grambling lately?
Part of the reason Southern canned their coach was that the team's poor performance was leading to a shite-ton of empty seats.
HBCUs don't have the drawing power they used to even 20 years ago. The last major NFL star to come out of a HBCU that I can remember is Steve McNair and he was there because he couldn't get anyone to let him play QB at the DI-A level, IIRC.
If it appears that the crowds are leaving, the schools may do desperate things in order to convince them that their fortunes will change.

Last year's Bayou Classic must have been a real barnburner with a Grambling team that bad and a Southern team which replaced its coach two weeks into the season.
