Making rookies cover for $30k meals or paying for veterans to take a trip to Vegas and paying for their enjoyment at a strip club is going too far.

SFP....in Bryant's case he had just signed an 8.3 million dollar contract, but honestly, in my opinion, even that is absurd making him cover that dinner tab.

hazing is part of in-group identification for new additions to the group. it's a way to prove how much you want to be part of the group and a stripping down of individuality so that you put the group ahead of yourself. while silly in some situations, it's important for things like team sports

The most offensive part of this whole story is that a grown man would still willingly go by the name Richie.

Even football players need to grow up sometime. Hazing is wrong, period. The NFL is a profession, not a secret society. There is no reason to continue the hazing, even if "They did it to me when I was a rookie."

didn't he get thrown off of a college team?

They like to pretend it is a profession. It is really oversized little boys playing a game.

Dungy was on DP's show this morning and said he was labeled a "Do Not Draft" player because of character issues.

sure there is. strip down individuality in order to put team first. that's important in football, especially a cohesive unit like OL. you have to lose a part of your self to where you're not "Richie Incognito" 100% anymore. a certain % of you is not longer yourself, and you're just "Dolphins' center, 1 cog among 52 other cogs"

So Richie's a team player for making someone else pick up his Vegas tab and leaving threatening voicemails? No sale.

Usually you make more sense to me, so this is throwing me off a bit
Look, I'm active duty US Army. That is a profession where we rely on each other to have our backs. We literally put our lives in each other's hands. Hazing used to be all over the military, and I was definitely hazed coming up. However, the military has changed, and hazing is a punishable offense today, for good reason.
"Picking on" someone can easily escalate, see: Columbine. An extreme example to be sure, but it still happened.

And there's different kinds of hazing.
There's stupid bullshite like when I was a HS freshman and we were jokingly told "you have to wear your helmet all day today during class".
Then there's assault, like a freshman being tied to a tree and covered in Icy Hot or being given a swirlee.
Then there's criminal activity, which is what seems to be going on in the Dolphins locker room with the rookies being forced to cover tens of thousands of dollars in costs.
I could see such a thing being a one-time occurrence and then the rookies being off the hook for the rest of the season for anything other than Popeye's and donuts.
Being on the hook for the older teammates' dinners at expensive restaurants multiple times as well as Vegas trips is horseshite.

Bull. Michael Irvin put it best on NFL network Sunday morning. He said of course there is hazing, joking, etc. But he said the line was drawn when it comes to family and money.
When guys are hit up to contribute funds in the thousands of dollars that is over the line.

herm edwards kind of went on about similar today with regards to money - that if it were A dinner, so be it rooks can all chip in but he wouldnt let it be a regular event. that with smaller things, he was fine with it and he would demand that a dozen donuts were on his desk 1 day a week for instance.
the problem is the thing costing $5 and a few minutes leaves the door open for some meathead to go crazy with it. i think theres a place for some light joking around in a group but if you dont have someone really watching tight and drawing a line and making sure its in good fun for everybody - it can get ugly fast.

He should have punched incognito in his jaw and been done with it.
There are no ramification's its teammates and the incident got heated based on Incognitos comments. There would be no reprecussions for this dude and it would have been taken care of.
and you know it would have been taken care of how?
oh wait, you dont
you just imagine that your balls would be so big you could handle it
maybe he did try to stop it and they wouldnt quit
you tough guys ever think of that?

Yep this is essentially extortion. Make the rookies carry your pads and helmet but demanding someone pay you money or they will make your life hell is criminal.
