re: Does the Fact that Only 9 Teams Have Won in 30 Years Help or Hurt the NBA?

What's your solution for the problem then?
24 teams instead of 30 so the product is less watered down, get rid of the lottery, pay a 1000% penalty for going over the cap

Those teams you mentioned most people want to see in the Finals b/c those teams you mentioned get the Star power.
The NFL has created a product, such that it doesn't really matter at all who's in the Super Bowl as far as ratings go, though.

quote:There's only 16 games in an NFL season. Plus 4 in the playoffs. There can be a lot of randomness in that many games. The Bobcats were like 9-7 after 16 this past season, and if the NBA had single elimination in the playoffs, who knows what would happen then.
Not only that but the NFL has taken steps in recent years to allow teams that are 3-13 make the Super Bowl the next year. You will never see the Bobcats go from worst record to the Finals.
The point is you can't compare NBA/NFL parity because the leagues are completely different. If the NFL switched to a longer season and playoff series, then there'd be less perception of parity. The only way to get parity in the NBA is to shorten the season and go to single elimination playoffs. And that will never happen.

Wrong. Football is the one sport where a longer season will hurt the best teams because players would drop like flies due to injury.

Agree with Zamorro even though he's trolling like usual.
This is so fricking hilariously false.
Apparently you don't know "the business side of sports." Take a step back Tom Benson. Forbes is fricking AWFUL btw.
Absolutely, no question.
Nope. I hate always bringing this up but I've seen and valued multiple sports franchises. This is cut and dry, its simply straight up not true. Sports franchises are toys of rich people, you don't own a sports franchise to make money. The fricking Lakers lose money (yes, I did a valuation on the Lakers, I've seen their "books"). Sorry bro, reality sucks.

Dojo, there isn't a single NBA team in the red. Not a single one. Most owners use these teams as tax shelters when in reality, they are making bank.

Dude I know the business side of sports. There isn't a single NFL or NBA team in the red. They cook the books like all hell (paying themselves rental fees for arena/stadium usage, setting aside a healthcare "fund" for their volunteers and all kinds of other tomfoolery). Forbes is a great site and magazine and all, but they are EXTREMELY naive if they really believe that any franchise in the NFL or NBA is losing money.

Team owners will very seldom say that they are making a profit.

Some teams (not as common in the pros, but moreso in the lower levels) will actually say they are in the red as a part of their marketing strategy. They'll make the public think they could lose the team if they don't come out and support them. It's a good way to drum up some easy revenue, but it's horribly deceiving.

Parity isn't measured by who wins titles. It's measured by how competitive teams are on a game by game basis and by the gap in quality between the top teams and the bottom teams.

dc is a great bball market and has some of the best HS players in the country
Salt Lake City is a great bball town b/c its the only pro team the state has.

The lack of parity helps. Most teams that win titles have stars people love seeing win/lose in the playoffs and this goes across multiple fan bases.
Truth, I don't give a shite to see Golden State, or Memphis to be honest.
I wanna see Kobe vs. Lebron vs. Durant in every round of both the western and eastern conference playoffs. Make that happen.

They need to go with a hard cap, but the max salary should be eliminated. It suppresses the salary of the top players. The reason it's possible for Lebron, Wade, and Bosh to be signed by the same team is because all are taking much less than the market value. If players were allowed to sign for as much as they can get, there is no way any team can fit all of their salaries under the cap. Unless you hit the jackpot in the draft (i.e. Spurs and Thunder), it's impossible for a small market team to compete. They will not be able to get any top talent in free agency. There is absolutely no chance that the non-glamorous destinations (i.e. Utah, Minneapolis) will have a shot at the top players. If you're a top player and you know you're going to make the same amount no matter what, why would you even entertain those destinations?

And that's just it. The thing that made the NBA popular (promoting individual stars) is what's really the reason behind its current lack of popularity.
People follow stars and are fans of those stars these days instead of teams. This is the only major US sport where this happens.
And fans are getting tired of it, I guess.

It definitely hurts. I know every single year that my Timberwolves have no shot st the title. The lottery is a fricking joke. In 15 years the Wolves have NEVER moved up the the lottery. EIGHT times though they've moved lower.
In 1992, we had the worst record in the league only winning 15 games. Instead of getting Shaq, we get Christian frikking Laettner.
In 1993 we had the 2nd worse record. Instead of Penny Hardaway or Chris Webber, we get the loser JR Rider.
In 1994, we tied for the 2nd worse record. Instead of drafting Grant Hill or Jason Hill, we end up with Donyell Marshall.
Get rid of the stupid lottery as it makes the NBA look rigged.

Except it's popular. I don't know why people keep repeating this when it's so obviously not the case.

I don't know if this was mentioned, but every finals since 1980 has had at least 1 of the following:
Lakers, Rockets, Pistons, Bulls, Spurs, Heat.
Lakers, Rockets, Pistons, Bulls, Spurs, Heat.
