NFL Super Bowl Winners since 1983
Redskins: 3
Raiders: 1
49ers: 4
Bears: 1
Giants: 4
Cowboys: 3
Packers: 2
Broncos: 2
Rams: 1
Ravens: 2
Patriots: 3
Bucs: 1
Steelers: 2
Colts: 1
Saints: 1
15 different teams in 30 years. Not bad.

Um, there are franchises that are drowning.

Do people actually think getting rid of 4 teams will make the NBA more competitive and/or better?
I say go to 24 teams (12 per conference). In doing so, 6 teams of 12 players get distributed to the rest of the league which rids the league of the watered down product.

Not only that but the NFL has taken steps in recent years to allow teams that are 3-13 make the Super Bowl the next year. You will never see the Bobcats go from worst record to the Finals.

There were 23 teams in the early 80's. I think it's time to get back to that number or near it.

I just threw them in for no reason. The Pels were my main focus in the troll.

but the Celtics did...
parity is overrated... it just makes the championships not mean anything if it goes unchecked
john Curtis wins 2A football every year basically, but if someone were to beat them, it'd be a big deal and that championship would mean more than one where 8 different teams win in 10 years for example
if your team doesn't win, you measure them by "are they closer to a title than they were a year ago?"

If you want parity then eliminate the 7 game series. Take the 16 teams that make it to the finals and have a playoff bracket similar to the sweet 16 in college Bball.

Dojo, there isn't a single NBA team in the red. Not a single one. Most owners use these teams as tax shelters when in reality, they are making bank.

Wasn't that pre-Stern? Those who say parity is overrated say that because they are fans of a constant winner.

Take the 16 teams
That is a problem in itself. There is no reason more than half the league makes the playoffs. The NFL has the perfect number of teams. Have a Bye for the top seeds. Also, go back to best of 5 in the first round.

Per Forbes (2012):
quote:
12 teams posted five-year averages in the red, and the NBA’s least profitable team is the Charlotte Bobcats. The massive losses are the reason Michael Jordan was able to buy a majority stake in the Bobcats (he previously was a minority owner) in a deal that valued the franchise at the fire-sale price of $175 million in March 2010. Jordan also pledged $100 million to cover the team’s losses which have picked up in recent seasons. The team has lost an average $20 million over the last three seasons, $6 million more than any other team in that period.
quote:
The biggest exception to the major market rule is the Dallas Mavericks, who have not made money since 2002 despite playing in the fourth-most populous metro area and winning the NBA Finals last season. They rank at No. 26 with a five-year average loss of $8.9 million.

no this was when they got Allen and Garnett... they went from 24-58 to 66-16

Well duh, if you form a super team of course it's possible. I'm talking becoming a contender through the draft. The Panthers and Jags made the Championship games in less than 5 years of even existing. The only time that happened in the NBA was the Magic.

The lack of parity helps. Most teams that win titles have stars people love seeing win/lose in the playoffs and this goes across multiple fan bases.

Dude I know the business side of sports. There isn't a single NFL or NBA team in the red. They cook the books like all hell (paying themselves rental fees for arena/stadium usage, setting aside a healthcare "fund" for their volunteers and all kinds of other tomfoolery). Forbes is a great site and magazine and all, but they are EXTREMELY naive if they really believe that any franchise in the NFL or NBA is losing money.
