I like Bobby and loved to listen to Buddy D but the rest of those guys..... Did anyone listen to them speak before hiring them for a radio job? As far as the answer to the OP's question, this has been a surprisingly well kept secret for this day and age.

No, that wasn't it. Otherwise they would have to close the whole station down.

I see what you're saying.
My short answer is that Buddy 1) knew what he was talking about. 1a) was actually intelligent 2) was an old sports writer before being pulled into electronic media in the 1960s. Wheras Deke has a degree from Manship School within the last 20 years or so for broadcast journalism. Buddy had skins on the wall for over a decade before he went to TV, and another 20 years before going to WWL 870.

Bobby is not meant to be the "lead" he's the color guy, even on call-in radio, the forumla, usually, is smooth-talking host and less-refined analyst. And look, I'm a local guy who values both the refined, as well as the "he-sounds-like-us" types (just not Coach O.) But to have a guy like Da Big Chief...and who gave him THAT name, anyway? as your LEAD guy? That's just a bit too much, even for me.

Garic? He's no Kenny Wilkerson, RIP.

I remember receiving my first inappropriate content warning from Facebook about 8 or 9 years ago when my group titled "Deke Bellavia Must Die" was flagged for being hateful.

I called in after the West Virginia game in 2010. Throughout the entire "Purple and Gold Point After," he took an extremely negative approach toward LSU and their chances of having a decent record by the end of the year because of our weak QB play. I argued his point, stating that with our defense, special teams, and a running game, the QB situation wasn't a big issue. I rattled off stats to back up my point as to how LSU could go on to compete for the West, beat Alabama and make it to a major bowl game (LSU did all three). I really nailed the phone call. If this were a job interview, I would have gotten the job.

Instead of countering me with his opinion based on what he's seen so far, he ended the phone call, saying, "I can appreciate fans being positive, but don't be 'goofy.'" At first I was angry, but then I realized the reason he did this because he knew he couldn't win the debate, and this is a debate he should win for all intents and purposes because this was his paid profession.

Deke is one of those guys where you can listen for a show, or maybe even a week's worth of shows, and he seems solid, but if you listen to him for an extended period of time, you find out he's not real knowledgeable. You find out he is a house of cards.

He was an extremely unlikable, idiotic sounding, rude hot head running the show on a long established flagship sports radio program. The question should be why did he freaking last so long at this job? I would rather listen to just about anyone else you could possibly find than him any day of the week. I would rather listen to Jon Fine or Richard Condon or Buddy Songy talking about being spicy than Deke. It could not get any worse than Deke. Period.

Garic is not much of an improvement, at all.

And when are we going to find out who is going to do Saints play by play?

Those who downvoted the post that he was fired because of drugs - I can tell you is that is the rumor in the Amite/Independence area, which is where he's from. Have no idea if true or not, and had never heard anything about him having drug issues until he left the station and I asked someone who knows him and they told me that was the reason.

I used to listen on my drive home, and while he was fairly knowledgeable about sports, he was hard to listen to, and made Buddy D sound like Professor Henry Higgins. Also seemed to live for being rude to callers.

All this is true, he could infuriate you with his takes on things, but he was very much often right in his observations about most things sports related......if he said something about horse racing, take it to the bank the man knew the ponies and he knew the NFL

He could also do hard news if pressed. I remember during the Florida recount a Supreme Court decision came in on a Friday night during his show and he was the only professional host at the station and he had to carry the load until some of the other talent got in and he was nailing it

Deke certainly had a perfect face for radio, but he didn’t have some of the other requirements, like intelligence, diction, and vocabulary.

That's because Buddy was an actual reporter and a writer, long before he hosted a talk show on the radio. Unlike most of these talking head clowns who are on the radio today.

Also, if Deke graduated from the Manship School... someone needs to look at that program.
