Does anyone else have issue with pro teams calling themselves "World Champs"?

I always think about that John Cleese bit: “When we hold a World Championship for a particular sport, we invite teams from other countries to play as well.”

College sports have enough sense to just call themselves National Champs. The only other county that is ever involved with American pro sports is Canada. Just call yourselves "MLB Champs" or "NFL Champs" and leave it at that.

I don't need to see the Chiefs beat any given international team by 40+ to know they're the best professional football team in the world.

You think any other pro football, basketball, or baseball team could beat ours?

I don’t

We call ourselves world champs at the sports in which we have the best leagues in the world.

The winners of the MLS don't call themselves world champs.

What sports could another country put together a team and actually compete with us, or even beat? Baseball and basketball?

Won't include hockey.

Meh. The only sport in which another country can compete with our league's champion would be MLB, but you'd have to take players off said championship team in order to field the international team.

It’s not the teams. It’s the players. The best players from all over the world play in the NFL, MLB, and NBA

Without using current MLB or NBA players?

I agree for the most part, but if you're actually not competing against the world, don't call yourself a world champ.

Not a hill I'm dying on, just an observation.

If you're not putting together super teams, ala Dream Team?

Off the top of my head I couldn't say what the majority demographic is for hockey players, but I would guess a large majority isn't US born.

Someone will probably correct me.

No because the pro teams claiming that are clearly the best in the world at that sport.

If the MLS team began calling themselves world champs, then you've got a problem.

The 4 major sports leagues in the United States have roughly 95% of the world's best players in their respective sports in them. When you account for other pro leagues and college players, it makes it not 100%.

It doesn't matter if the Chiefs play the Saskatchewan Rough Riders, or if the Nationals play the Hiroshima Carp or the Doosang Bears. The best PLAYERS in the world are in the NFL and MLB, so they are the world champions.

Which country?

Now remember, you have to factor in that this is not the Olympics, virtually all of the best players from other countries are in the MLB, so they would actually count for America.

Why does that matter, even if true?
The best players still mostly all play in the NHL. So they are still the best champions in the world.
