Do you still care about the MLB Homerun Derby?

I don't really get excited about it anymore. There was a time when all the big name superstars participated, and it was great. Lately fewer and fewer of those types have chosen to participate, and the league has had to include guys in the competition that never would've been there in the early years. Similar thing happened with the NBA Slam Dunk Competition.

I would certainly like to see some more big name players but generally there are still a few, plus theybway they do it now with the time clock makes it pretty exciting. You get sort of walk offs this way.

Last year was awesome, although Stanton vs Judge should have been the final...

I still watch just to see the distance they hit these balls, but of course, I'm not a kid watching Griffey with my backward hat in awe anymore either.

It’s still much better than the dunk contest. You don’t get the superstar names, partially because it seems like more players are home run hitters these days. The best players in the game aren’t all mashers. In my youth, you just knew guys like Griffey, McGwire, Sosa would crush it.

Nowadays, it can be any number of players.

Depends on what you mean by care.

I guess it's more marketable if you get Harper, Trout, Judge etc to participate. But its hard to make more out of it than what it is....glorified batting practice with guys trying to hit balls as far as possible. In that regard, does it matter much if it's Judge or Joey Gallo doing the hitting? I guess when it comes to the derby, once a year my attention can be occupied by "watch ball go far."

There might be more buzz to see Judge but if Gallo hits 3 or 4 500 foot moonshots in a row, nobody cares who's not participating.

Springer

He's sworn off home run derbies. He said he did one in the minors and it fricked up his swing for a while. Considering he's coming out of a 5/64 slump, I can't sign off on his participation.

I think it's still one of the best all-star related events (including the games themselves), honestly

It's gotten better over the past few years.

I fricking HATE hearing Chris Berman saying "back, back, back."

We get it, dude, it's the homerun derby.

I hate that myth, even though Judge went into a prolonged slump after the derby

The new timed format makes it a lot better. I’ll watch it if I’m home and it’s on. Not going out my way to dvr it or anything

I'd love to see Ozzie Albies go up against Judge. How awesome would that photo be?

Yes it is.... I would rather watch it than the all- Star game.... the actual game is a pitching bore fest.

Especially these days with the heat every one of these guys can bring in a one or two inning outing.

I remember when Pedro struck out 5 or 6 guys in his 2 inning start. Seems like that is more common these days with the strikeout hitters and strikeout pitchers.

The Homerun Derby almost had higher ratings than the All-Star Game last year. So judging by that metric, I would say a lot of people still care.

Who doesn't want 3+ hours of Berman saying BACK?

In the World Series, an Astros player hit a HR and it caused an explosion. Maybe that’s what the All Star officials should go for. Literal firepower.

no, haven't watched in years.

Always liked the old Home run derby show. Where they would have 2 guys go against each other.
