It’s about having the power to kick LSU out of the SEC because we might break a rule.

The enforcement goes a lot lesser than expulsion. Nobody serious thinks the SEC is actually about to expel LSU at this point.

The realistic scenario for a nuclear response against LSU this year is banning them from the SECCG, which basically would remove them from playoff contention vicariously. Something like THAT could happen this year.

Not having to play the SEC championship game would likely increase playoff odds in the current system.

Asking for an apology, citing Kiffins halftime remark, citing a media report about Kiffin encouraging the players to sue the SEC…this is being vindictive.

there is a zero percent chance the CFP votes LSU in when every single one of their conference wins are vacated

I just don’t think an expulsion is warranted.

I don't think expulsion is something anyone is actually going for, but it's more of a "FAFO" warning to LSU and anyone else who wants to rely on these state court decisions to thwart SEC enforcement. Everyone is on notice and any violations that may be protected by state court now may ultimately put those schools on the cross when/if the SEC enforcement power is validated. That's the point.

If the encouraging players to sue the SEC is proven, LSU is in trouble long-term.

the other stuff is just allegations in a petition that you're over-valuing.

The apology stuff is from an media report, no? Not the petition(s)?

They updated their pleadings to include expelling LSU and scheduled a vote.

Trying that as a “bluff” and not following through would completely neuter the conference as a whole.

No

Every real/serious argument about punishing LSU involves actually rostering the players.

They've already basically telegraphed what will happen

quote:

The College Football Playoff weighed in Friday on the burgeoning dispute between LSU and the SEC over the use of players formerly contracted by NFL teams, saying it "strongly supports the positions and rules of individual conferences" and that "certain clear rules should be followed."

"These conference rules are intended to protect the needs, interests and integrity of the sport," the CFP statement said.

The rules should be followed, the statement went on, "so that individual institutions fielding FBS football teams know what will be expected of them, and so that the public can have full confidence in the competitive integrity of the sport."

It comes a day after a Louisiana state court granted LSU a preliminary injunction that, for now, paves the way for the Tigers to roster players who were under contract this offseason with NFL teams.

Violating the conference rules is a rubicon they've publicly declared. If that happens, LSU is in real risk of not being selected for the playoffs.

No. No it wouldn't

It's a warning shot, since LSU has, as of today, not rostered the players. The SEC is telling LSU (and every other SEC member) what the "FO" could be if they "FA"

Particularly given they have a reasonable case what about Lane Kiffin, Liz Murrill, Jeff Landry and Lee Mallett gives you any hint they will bend the knee to completely illogical filings about Kiffin making a sarcastic joke.

That’s a much different conversation than just barring LSU from the SECCG brudda

I doubt it. SEC makes scratch on more playoff teams and that would also hurt the other SEC playoff contender resumes as well one way or the other.

I just don't get the emotional takes

LSU has a real chance at a title this year and LSU fans emotionally want to roster 2 players who will have minimal impact on the season and risk being left out of the CFP.

They'd rather be martyrs than champions. It's so irrational.

Just cut the 2 guys loose and move on. Low risk, maximum reward. That was always the smart play.

Would the SEC (the schools, not the admin/SAnkey) be willing to give this up for one year to prove its point? Probably.

Also, it's very likely LSU's slot could/would be filled by another SEC school
