I attended half dozen Thrashers matches before they pulled up stakes and left town. Tickets were dirt cheap on stub hub and ebay.

That franchise never recovered after Heatley’s/Snyder fatal auto accident

This morning I was wondering if the Thrashers are still in Atlanta if Heatley had just called a cab.

I became a hockey fan in the late 2000s and adopted the Thrashers. Didn't last long unfortunately.

When I was at GT they would often have $1 ticket nights, we would get huge blocks of tickets and have a great night.

Make no mistake ASG is what caused that team to fail not the city or fans.

I attended many games including one of the 2 against the Rangers. The atmosphere was electric for the playoffs. The atmosphere was better than the NBA imo. The ASG truly ruined it. Support was pretty good considering the limited success.

ASG is the #1 culprit, but while the team drew well, in reality the fan base was somewhat small.

Atlanta has so many transplants now that have retained the fandom from their hometown team, so when you would go to a game, while the stands might be 75% full, Maybe 70% of those in attendance were Thrashers fans, the other 30% were Redwings/Rangers/Flyers/Bruins fans that came out to see and cheer for the opposing team, and then wouldn't go back until that team came back.

Also, the location of the arena didn't match well with your hockey fan base. Much like the Braves moving to Cobb County to get closer to the heart of their ticket holders, the Thrashers needed to be out in the suburbs, because a lot of suburban folks that would have gone to games were not going into downtown at night for a game.

I loved going. I remember going to the first preseason game, and the place was rocking. Later that year they played a late afternoon/early evening Sunday game, so we went to see the Falcons/Panthers and then walked across and went to see the Thrashers play Ottawa.

Heatley and Kovalchuk were a dynamic pair, and I think if Heatley had stayed in Atlanta, and the team had actually been able to host the All Star game as planned in 2005 and not have it pushed back to 2008, maybe things would have been different.

The really sad thing about the Heatey accident was his BAC was below the legal limit. So either he was a lightweight or, more likely, just couldn't handle the power of the Ferrari 360.

Everyone saying that the ASG ruined the Thrashers for Atlanta is absolutely correct. That ownership group had no idea how to market and create excitement for a team that, at times, showed a great deal of promise.

When Arthur Blank created Atlanta United, he literally did the exact opposite of what the Thrashers did, marketing wise. Clearly, that has been phenomenally successful. The Predators, to a lesser extent, also learned from the Thrashers' mistakes. Instead of advertising to transplants, both organizations have worked well to embrace and promote the uniqueness of their actual cities/cultures, and weave the teams into it.

Much like the Hawks have done with the Atlanta hip-hop scene, the Thrashers should have been tied in with the Atlanta rock community. So many missed opportunities, solely because the ownership group was incompetent.

Probably because they didn't even try. ASG didn't give a shite about the Thrashers (they were a package deal with their purchase of the Hawks and Philips Arena operating rights) and wanted to get rid of them as soon as they could.

I attend a convention at the GWCC and if the Thrashers were in town, always went to a game. The last year they were there, I got a lower level seat for less than $20.

The post game radio show was at Taco Mac next to the arena. Fun times.

Hell they even had a chance to sell the Thrashers to an owner that would keep them in Atlanta and they didn't

That owner would've gotten screwed by ASG because the latter still had operating control of Philips. ASG wanted the team out of the arena by any means necessary.

Gospel truth. The only reason they stayed in town for as long as they did is because the ASG legally couldn't sell them until after all of their lawsuits. As soon as the ink was dry, they were on the way to a truck stop in central Canada.

Knights came after the Flames.

Flames (NHL) 1972-1980. Owned by Tom Cousins (real estate developer, built the Omni arena, also bought the Hawks and moved them from St. Louis to Atlanta). The team lost $12 million over 8 seasons in Atlanta. Sold and relocated to Calgary. Fun fact, the Calgary Flames alternate captain's jersey indicator A is the old Atlanta Flames logo.

Knights (IHL)1992-1996. Affiliate of Tampa Bay Lightning. Had pro hockey's first black head coach (John Paris) and first start by a female (goalie Manon Rhéaume). Moved to Quebec in 1996 due to the demolition of the Omni/construction of Philips Arena and the return of the NHL.

Thrashers (NHL) 1999-2011.
