Dixie State University will not be Dixie State University much longer.

The committee tasked with exploring a name change has come back with a 13-3 in favor of changing the 109-year-old university's name. "The university is working very hard to become the nation’s first and only open, inclusive, comprehensive, polytechnic university, which will offer students from southern Utah and beyond unique active learning opportunities to prepare for the in-demand careers of their dreams," Julie Beck, DSU Board of Trustee member and chair of the Name Recommendation Committee, said in a statement Monday. "An institutional name that will not only highlight this academic mission but also distinguish the university on a statewide level will better support the aspirations of our students, alumni, faculty and staff."

I mean, are we still allowed to say we live in the South? Or will we need to say "we live underneath the North?

Because saying the South has just as much racial connotation as Dixie

They are just words used to describe a place

Mostly because words convey thoughts.

I just don't get the trouble with the word Dixie. It literally means the American South. It really has nothing to do with the Civil war other than obviously since the south was one of the sides of the war and Dixie means the south, people referred to the south as Dixie. That's it. It's original name comes from $10 New Orleans bank notes with french words on them "Dix".

WTF? Southern Utah? At Dixie State?

Also the first open inclusive comprehensive polytechnic university? Again What? Ever heard of Virginia or Georgia Tech? Or any other Tech?

ETA: Today I learned Dixie state is in Utah. I swear I thought it was in Mississippi. I honestly have no idea why they were ever called this in the first place.

Because thoughts are followed by the corresponding emotion, which is followed by action.

People who let words scare them and affect their mindset are weak. Nothing wrong with that, but it's the truth. If you want to pacify weak people and create more weak people, let's keep catering to this nonsense.

This is dumb as hell. So because a weak person is offended by the word dixie, everyone who does not hold that same opinion should be concerned and change the name. You aren't making some brilliant point.

Are you making the point that removing statues would lower crime rates? That's what it sounds like.

Actually, I just told you how the mind works. We're talking science here. You assumed the rest.

Basically a bunch of Southerners moved there in the 1850s and eventually started calling the area Dixie b/c of environmental similarities to the South and the cotton business they brought. The school changed it's name from St. George Stake Academy to Dixie State in 1915. In the 1950s they started calling themselves the Rebels, adopted a Confederate soldier as their mascot, and started waving the Stars and Bars at games. In the past few decades they've slowly cut ties to the Confederate imagery and have been talking about changing the school's name for quite a while.

This is one of the big reasons they want to change the name. Hardly anyone realizes they are in Utah and the name is off putting for the kids in the Western states they are trying to recruit as students.

They should probably just go back to something similar to the school's original name like St. George College.
