I love it. One of the best memes ever. What obnoxious reporter and what an awesome response.

to do what he did, you have to be a once in a decade talent

16 year old facing CC pitchers is quite a feat, and to dominate, at that age.

As you would guess, it was pretty big news in vegas.

LVRJ article from 2009

Bleacher report from 2008

The local school district was extremely butthurt about it.

I mean, he is on a Hall of Fame path at 32
52.4 WAR
Rookie of the Year
2 MVP's
8-time All-Star
4-time Silver Slugger

345 home runs
1725 hits

He should finish with over 500 home runs and close to 2500 hits. Another MVP would make it obvious, which is impressive considering he has had a few seasons with injuries.

Are you my brother? My mother literally asked if a high school underclassmen had ever been drafted and I told her and my brother that about 30 minutes ago

Remember he hit a HR into some desert and ESPN was out there in some cactuses trying to find out exactly how far he hit it?

That’s probably not how it happened but that’s what I remember

Also you’re exactly right about how it was covered.
Yeah that's basically what happened

In 66 games, at 16 years old, in a wooden bat JUCO league, he went

BA - .443
OBP - .526
OPS - 1.511
Hits - 101
2B - 23
3B - 4
HR - 31
RBI - 98
BB - 39
SB - 20

While catching every game.

Just unreal stuff.

I mean look at his high school numbers
quote:

Freshman Year:
Harper batted .590 with 11 home runs and 67 RBIs in 38 games as a freshman.

Sophomore Year:
He achieved a .626 batting average, .723 on-base percentage, and 1.339 slugging percentage, hitting 14 home runs, 22 doubles, 9 triples, and stealing 36 bases in 39 games. .

Over 2.000 OPS as a sophomore

No US high school player has been as talented as Harper was as a prospect. That isn’t dogging on anyone he was just that good

Dropped out of highschool and got his GED because they wouldn't pitch to him in highschool.

That’s not why he dropped out. He did all that so he could get drafted a year earlier

Was there a big out cry by the national media or baseball talking heads about this?

Them not pitching or him dropping out? It wasn’t an outcry but more of a curiosity about this highschool phenom that played JUCO ball with I believe a wood bat and still lead JUCO in HR’s

I read that he got a Philly fanatic tattoo. Its rare from a player these days to see him repping his team and adopted city so enthusiastically (especially one like Philly that has its problems).
